⏱ 90-second insight 🤔 Three things the best operators avoid when creating their methane program. This week, we're sharing three critical things we've learned from our conversations with operators around the country—and we aren't putting them behind an email capture wall 👀 If you want to dive deeper into these insights, or see how our Compass tool can help predict the outcomes of different survey approaches in each basin, reach out to us at InsightM.com. #methane #methanemitigation #methaneemissions #emissions #oilandgas

“What we’re trying to do is build an on-ramp for new capital to solve this problem.” This week on #CarbonFrontiers2024, we welcome Talal Debs, Founder and CEO of Zefiro Methane Corp., into the SmarterMarkets™ studio to discuss #Zefiro’s work to stop #methane emissions by plugging orphaned and abandoned #oil and #gas wells in the U.S. – and how they use #carbonmarkets to finance it. During the episode, Debs walks listeners through: • The size and scale of methane leakage from orphaned and abandoned oil and gas wells in the U.S. • How methane leakage is an ongoing problem, not just an effort of cleaning up the after effects of past industry practices • How #Zefiro works alongside existing regulations and operations in these industries to put a price on the cleanup and attract more capital to scaling solutions. He tells Greely: 🗯️ "If you over-regulate an industry, then you make it so expensive for them to run their factories and their sites that it actually destroys local #economy, it destroys jobs, and you get a sort of another negative effect. So what I really think is the missing piece is putting a price on those externalities. And that's actually what the #carbon markets do." Co-Director, Energy Emissions Modeling and Data Lab (EEMDL), Assistant Professor, Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin
It has been a busy week for EEMDL at #CERAWeek. Energy Emissions Modeling and Data Lab and Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) co-organized a roundtable discussion at CERA week to discuss insights on recent progress in methane monitoring, measurement, reporting, and verification (#MMRV), discuss pathways to leverage ongoing methane-related activities, and identify opportunities for global cooperation. We prepared a short pre-read for the roundtable that I am sharing here - it identifies key synergies between the US' (and other countries') MMRV framework and existing voluntary initiatives such as OGMP 2.0. Critically, it also identifies ways in which existing initiatives are incomplete in the context of enabling a supply chain MMRV framework. For example, OGMP 2.0 only requires reporting across individual assets and do not require supply chain integration. We also emphasized the need for capacity building efforts to ensure that MMRV efforts can be scaled across global supply chains. The roundtable was attended by US federal officials, key industry leaders from the US and around the world, NGOs, and stakeholders in the MMRV ecosystem. The success of the MMRV framework demands a broadly collaborative approach - we invite you to work with us on the development of MMRV tools as part of our differentiated gas roadmapping initiative: https://lnkd.in/dq8U_zz2

Early in 2023, we asked our CRIN community to help us identify the innovation challenges associated with Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) using the Cold Heavy Oil Production with Sand (CHOPS) method. And unsurprisingly, you delivered on that request! So, what were the themes identified? Check out our story on the Top 11 challenges raised and some potential solutions: https://bit.ly/3T4EkTS This article is a product of the collaborative efforts of CRIN’s Novel Hydrocarbon Extraction community, and the invaluable contributions and careful editing of An Mai, Vicky Qualie, Debbie Burke, Kevin To, Stephen Arseniuk, and Gokhan Coskuner. #CRINinAction #CHOPS #EOR #CO2 #EmissionsReductions #Innovation

🙌🏽 The #GlobalGreenhouseGasWatch is a reality already in 2024! https://lnkd.in/e2zn3Xvf MethaneSAT will provide #free data with the support of the Environmental Defense Fund #EDF Google #Google.org, and this represents a significant #GreenhouseGas #Monitoring initiative that will help slowing #ClimateChange by showing where & when #Methane leaks are occurring and enabling fast repairing and abating of emissions, and most importantly to quantify the emissions to atmosphere. This is what everyone call a #winwin scenario because #Clean #Jobs that support #PeopleandPlanet are being created to solve a common challenge, #ClimateChange. The successful launch 🚀 was on the 4th of March 2024 on a SpaceX Flacon 9 that reached polar orbit from which the #satellite 🛰️ will monitor vast areas of the globe creating high resolution maps of #Methane at 1x1 square kilometres #worldwide and with an impressive precision of about 3 ppbs or parts per billion. This adds up to an ecosystem of #Japanese #European #American #Chinese and #Global satellites that are already orbiting and that constitute a #PublicPrivatePartnership in the area of #ClimateChangeSolutions. #Data #precision and #authoritativeness are key to build #CarbonMarkets based on #Trust and #Accountability, in which #CH4 #CO2 emissions are assimilated to direct planetary #costs and absorptions /reductions of the emissions are rightly associated with #planetary #values building a #GreenEconomy of scale. This satellite joins a fleet already up there 👆 🌌 : #TROPOMI, #SCIAMACHY, #GOSAT, #GOSAT-2, and soon #CO2M. Our Copernicus ECMWF Teams in preparation for #CO2M have already demonstrated the potential of assimilating these data sources to build information products (see https://lnkd.in/e3vbJQdU ) that can support #policy making (see https://lnkd.in/eXEXdRga) and more broadly #ClimateAction. GHGSAT, #PRISMA, #EnMAP, GF-5, ZY-1, Carbon Mapper are already thriving realities and many more #Private and #Public initiatives will come as the #CarbonMarkets are simply huge and in the area of a #Trillions dollars #Economy. Yes that’s right no typos! UNCTAD has estimated these are the investments being associated to #ClimateChangeSolutions (see https://lnkd.in/eKyNwE8V ). The World Meteorological Organization support the #Coordination of #Observations #Data #Information & #Knowledge to best guide #AnticipatoryAction while making sure no one is left behind.
As we gear up for the MethaneSAT data product, here's what data to expect 📊: • high-emitting point sources • aggregate emissions from small sources within a km2 area down to 3ppb • methane levels from entire regions, countries, oilfields, covering 80% of global production. More about our unique capabilities: https://lnkd.in/eHJgYXmH

Come check out our #GHGT poster on open-data CCS screening tools in depleted fields on the Norwegian continental shelf. One of the new analysis tools coming out of #CSSR.
This year, I finally had the opportunity to attend the #GHGT conference. Tomorrow (October 22) from 2:48 PM to 2:59 PM, I’ll be presenting an e-poster (772) at D2, titled "Screening CO2 Storage Potential of Petroleum Reservoirs on the Norwegian Continental Shelf." In this study, my co-authors (Trine Solberg Mykkeltvedt and Sarah Gasda) and I present: 1) methodology to assess and compare CO2 storage potential of Norwegian petroleum fields based on open data; 2) database with many screening parameters covering almost all NCS; 3) web app for data visualization and screening; 4) some application examples. A brief presentation, along with links to the data, codes and web app are available in the stack HERE: https://lnkd.in/dQPV9Y7B. Feel free to check it out, even if you’re not attending #GHGT17!
