According to German Bahamon J., Head of the National Federation of Colombian Coffee Growers, the Colombian crop’s value for 2024 should total more than 14 trillion pesos (US$3.14 billion).

COFFEE GLOBAL MARKET WEEKLY UPDATES - Part 2 * #Nespresso to Invest $20 Million in Reviving Coffee Production in the Democratic Republic of Congo * Brazilian Real Weakness: #Arabica coffee prices were undercut by weakness in the Brazilian real, which dropped to a 1-week low against the dollar. The devaluation of the real encourages export selling from Brazil's coffee producers, contributing to the decline in prices. * Increased #Vietnam Exports: Robusta coffee prices retreated after Vietnam's agriculture ministry reported a significant increase in Q1 coffee exports, rising by 44% year-on-year to 799,000 metric tons. This surge in exports from Vietnam, the world's largest producer of #robusta coffee beans, adds pressure on prices. * Supply Concerns: Earlier in the week, coffee prices rose to highs driven by concerns over supply shortages. Vietnam's coffee production is forecasted to drop by 20% due to drought, contributing to tight robusta coffee supplies. Additionally, above-average rain in Brazil eased previous concerns of dryness, further influencing market sentiment. * #Global Coffee Exports: The International Coffee Organization (#ICO) reported an increase in global coffee exports, with January exports rising by 32.3% year-on-year to 12.62 million bags. However, concerns persist over the impact of the El Nino weather event on coffee production in various regions. * #Brazil, the world's largest grower and exporter of coffee beans, is poised to achieve a rare feat: its third consecutive year of increased coffee production. This trend, attributed to post-frost farming techniques and a surge in robusta bean cultivation, marks a significant departure from the traditional arabica biennial cycle. * Production Growth: Brazil's robusta fields have seen a remarkable increase in average yields, growing by approximately 50% over the past decade. In contrast, arabica yields have risen by 24% during the same period. * Production Estimates: Brazil's National Supply Company (#Conab) projects the 2024 crop at 58 million bags, representing a 5% increase from the previous year. Cumulatively, Brazil's coffee production is estimated to reach 164 million bags over the three-year period from 2022 to 2024.\ * Climate Change Threatens Colombian Coffee Production : Coffee production in the Sierra Nevada region has declined by 35% over the past five years, according to the Latin American and Caribbean Fairtrade Network (CLAC).

Have climate-related supply crunches in the cacao sector lead to arabica coffee’s sharp pricing increases recently? Despite Brazil & Columbia’s production climbing steadily, we’re seeing prices sky rocket in the specialty coffee industry. “Brazil’s 2023/24 arabica production will climb by 12.8% year-on-year to 44.9 million bags, due to higher yields and increased planted acreage. In Colombia, the world’s second-largest arabica producer, it will climb up by 7.5%.” ☕️ The increase in price of cacao doesn’t affect coffee production at all, yet we’re still feeling the impact of overall soft commodity sector surges. 📈 This isn’t a matter of supply & demand, it’s a much wider climate based issue, with market speculation across the soft commodity sector increasing prices for suppliers, roasters & consumers alike. 🫂 Do cacao & specialty coffee businesses need to work together to address the climate problem? How do we share agritech innovation across sectors & geographical locations? A more consistent supply chain will surely be mutually beneficial. Time will tell. https://lnkd.in/eKMhc34d

August saw a historic spike in the prices of both Robusta and Arabica coffee on the international market, reaching a 13-year high. The surge was largely due to adverse weather conditions in Brazil and Vietnam, the two leading coffee-producing countries, disrupting global supplies. The trend is expected to continue in September as supplies dry up and demand increases. Vietnam’s coffee output in the 2024-2025 crop year is expected to hit a 13-year low, adding to market stress. Vietnam's average coffee export price in August increased 73.4% year-on-year to $5,293 a tonne. In 2024, Brazil stood out on the global coffee scene, recording a significant increase in exports despite lower production compared to 2023. This growth in exports can be attributed to various factors, including climatic problems in other producing countries, such as Vietnam, which faced a severe drought. Additionally, the growing demand for coffee in China and the devaluation of the real against the dollar made Brazilian coffee more competitive in the international market. The Brazilian domestic market also showed resilience, with a slight increase in coffee consumption. In the first four months of 2024, retail coffee consumption grew by 0.16%, while soluble coffee consumption increased by 1.2% in the first half. These data indicate that despite the increase in exports, domestic consumption remains robust, reflecting the cultural and economic importance of coffee in Brazil. With an estimated production of 54.79 million 60-kg bags, Brazil is expected to have a production surplus in 2024. Projections indicate a global surplus of 1.3 million bags in the 2024/2025 season, and the Brazilian surplus is expected to increase from 1.9 million bags in 2023/2024 to 4.6 million bags in 2024/2025. These numbers show that Brazilian production will be sufficient to meet both domestic and export markets, resulting in a significant surplus. Over the past 20 years, Brazilian coffee farming has made remarkable advances in terms of sustainability and quality. There are still challenges in social and environmental areas that need to be overcome to achieve excellence. Issues such as working conditions and sustainable agricultural practices are areas that require continuous attention and improvement. With emerging trends such as regenerative and low-carbon coffee farming, Brazil is well-positioned to lead the way in responsible agricultural practices. As we continue to innovate and improve our practices, we are not only strengthening our position in the global market but also contributing to a more sustainable future for all. 🌍✨ #Coffee #Exports #Sustainability #Innovation #BrazilianCoffee

Brazil’s coffee sector in 2024 has shown a positive outlook despite some challenges. The country’s coffee production is expected to increase by around 5.5% compared to 2023, reaching approximately 58.08 million 60-kilogram bags. This growth is mainly attributed to better weather conditions and the biennial production cycle of Arabica coffee, which has improved the yield in key states like Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. Arabica production is projected to rise by 7.3%, while Robusta will see a modest 1.4% increase . However, recent rains have also affected the market by boosting soil moisture levels and improving crop prospects, leading to a drop in global coffee prices. Earlier fears about adverse weather affecting the 2024/25 crop are easing due to improved conditions in Brazil . On the export front, Brazil continues to dominate as a leading coffee exporter, with increasing demand driven by shortages in other coffee-producing nations like Vietnam. The Brazilian coffee industry expects significant revenues this year, reaching up to $10.7 billion, partly due to strong global demand for its Arabica coffee . This year, Brazil has also focused on increasing its exports of specialty coffee, with a 45% surge in the first months of 2024. The country has faced some logistical challenges, such as delays in ports, but it remains a key global supplier . #BrazilCoffee #CoffeeIndustry #CoffeeMarket #SpecialtyCoffee #ArabicaCoffee #RobustaCoffee #SustainableCoffee #CoffeeProduction #Agribusiness #BrazilianExports #CoffeeTrade #GlobalCoffee
