The free (as in you pay in unsuspected ways) availability of digital data brought us a golden age of open source/digital investigations accessible to many. This video is a good reminder that relying on private companies to create and operate infrastructures for public needs risks returning us to a more restricted, exclusive digital landscape. It's a good watch for those, like me, who occasionally need to remember the fact that much of open source/digital investigation involves repurposing tools designed for commercial purposes—not for advancing human rights or justice. One of the most important lessons I’ve recently learned: Be hesitant to accept new ideas. Our brains are wired to love novelties. We love new and different. It’s why gambling, social media, and drugs are so addicting. You can get a different results every time. But the issue with new and different, is that these ideas have not stood the test of time. They have not gone through years of debate, discussion, and counter arguments. Older ideas that remain true today have been around for so long that they have gone through years of scrutiny, so they have a better chance of being good. For example, if you want to learn about economics, don’t pick up the newest book or listen to whatever guru is hot at the moment. Go to the source and read Adam Smith the father of modern economics. We live in an age where information can almost be too available and the issue is finding out what is actually true.

Another brilliant Blog Post by Bradford Delong. It is review of some of the authors what they have been writing and saying specifically about democracy. MIT Professor Daron Acemoglu is the most prominent one. After reading this blog post that just gives a brief idea about the democratic evolution in Europe and the US based on the evolution of the system suggests that popular worries over liberal democracy in both US and Europe are unfounded in most of the academic and popular media/literature. What Biden needs is to sit with Professor Brad Ford Delong and Professor Daron Acemoglu and device a knowledge based strategy to win 2024 Presidential Elections. President Biden already claims he has done much of the economic work. Built on that in his each speech while making suitable adjustment for the kind of audience. Also Nothing is lost as it seems in Europe. Same is the case with Pakistan for example. As I read the blog it seemed that the current political instability is absolutely unnecessary. Must read blog post if you are concerned about democracy and if you want to understand why it may not be delivering the expected socio political dividends. And thank you professor Bradford for this amazing blog post. And it is free. 🤗
