🔎 EXPERIENCE AESTHETICS - BECAUSE THE BEAUTY OF GLASS IS OUR PRIORITY Selecting the appropriate glass for the façade of an architectural project could be a challenging decision. Several criteria need to be considered, among which the aesthetics is a key one! At Saint-Gobain Glass we strongly believe in the beauty of coated glass, and we focus our R&D programs in this direction. This spinning door is pure genius. Thanks to Robert Konieczny KWK Promes for using Microtopping®! Let’s talk about this project. The Plato Gallery project began with an architectural competition aimed at conserving a historically significant old slaughterhouse building, which the city had acquired from a private owner in 2016. Initially, the walls were in poor condition, with numerous holes and darkened bricks. Instead of concealing these flaws, the architects embraced them, preserving the building's character by filling holes with innovative materials whilst maintaining the existing structure. Microtopping®, from Ideal Work®, played a crucial role in the restoration process. This versatile material was used to create clean and seamless surfaces that mimicked the appearance of the original doors. Microtopping® is renowned for its ability to provide sleek textures and offers a wide range of customisable colours, making it an ideal choice for historical preservation projects like this. If you're new to this product, Microtopping® can be applied to almost any kind of surface, with a thickness of around 3 mm. Its adaptability and durability make it perfect for both interior and exterior applications, revitalising old structures whilst preserving their unique character. Check the link in the comments to learn more about this product! Framework Friday / The Crystal Cathedral LinkedIn, How the devil? It's that time again, this #FrameworkFriday let's lift our spirits with the architectural miracle and heaven sent concept that is the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. Designed by the legendary Philip Johnson and completed in 1980, this iconic structure stands as a testament to the possibilities of glass as a primary building material in monumental architecture. The Vision: Originally designed to house a burgeoning televangelist broadcast, the Crystal Cathedral redefined religious architecture with its transparent, all-glass facade. Its expansive and airy interior, free from visual obstructions, ensures that light not only enters but also permeates the spaces, creating an almost divine spectacle of brightness and clarity. Innovative Glazing Techniques: Utilizing over 10,000 panes of tempered, silver-coated glass attached to a lattice of white steel trusses, the cathedral's glass skin challenges traditional building methods and showcases the spectacular structural potential of glass. Each pane reflects the sky and surroundings, allowing the building to seamlessly integrate with the environment while maintaining a unique presence. Sustainable Features: The cathedral’s design was ahead of its time, incorporating passive solar heating and natural lighting to reduce energy consumption significantly. The reflective glass reduces the heat load, providing comfort without compromising on light. Structural Mastery: Philip Johnson’s masterpiece stands not just as a place of worship but as a beacon of architectural innovation. The use of cantilevered structures to support the towering glass walls demonstrates a masterful blend of aesthetics and engineering. Enduring Legacy: After decades, the Crystal Cathedral continues to be a focal point for architectural studies and remains a pilgrimage site for both worshippers and those who appreciate pioneering architecture. It exemplifies how traditional spaces can be reimagined through modern materials and technologies, impacting both spiritual and physical landscapes. Join us in celebrating the Crystal Cathedral—a structure where faith and design converge to create a timeless landmark. #FrameworkFriday #Structural Glazing #ArchitecturalGlazing #PhilipJohnson #CrystalCathedral #GlassArchitecture #StructuralEngineering #InnovationInGlass #SustainableDesign #IconicBuildings

The uniqueness of this effect is achieved thanks to ULMA’s water texture from the look range. This texture has a design with depth that simulates waves of 1mm thickness and serve to create an optical polychromatic effect and create a visual movement effect. By carefully placing the waves on the panels, ULMA achieved an optical effect of polychromatism, even though the same color has been used on all the panels. Believe it or not, this facade is made up of panels of the same color, a single shade of green. #architecture #texturalook #stoneo #opticaleffect #polychromatism #ventilatedfacade #ulmafacade #creativefacades #creativity #architecturaltextures #ulmaarchitectural #facades #soundsolutions

What would architectural masterpieces be at night without light? Invisible! Lighting ist more than just illumination. It accentuates the architectural essence of spaces. Facade lighting can visually enhance a building and show its architectural details. Targeted lighting can be used to highlight colours and textures, giving the building a completely different appearance at night. This type of staging can also help to define the character of a building and make it a distinctive point in the urban space. IP44.DE’s latest facade lighting innovations, eye + eye control and luci + luci control, are designed with this philosophy at heart. These luminaires blend sophisticated design with cutting-edge technology: The "control" versions with additional motion detectors offer effective ambient monitoring within a radius of up to nine metres. This means that the luminaires always provide light when it is needed. Thanks to the sophisticated IP44.DE locking technology and a wall bracket made of special alloy, both series are corrosion-resistant and guarantee the highest quality and long-lasting performance. The luminaires are available in the attractive colours "anthracite" and "deep black". With a light colour of 2700 Kelvin, eye and eye control create an inviting atmosphere and lend their surroundings an appealing and elegant touch. #IP44DE #outsidelighting #architecture

Discovering the intrinsic beauty of architectural integrity can transform not only our built environment but also our understanding of sustainable design. A recent project by Tsutsumi and Associates exemplifies this philosophy, showcasing the meticulous renovation of a 1979 irimoya-style house into a multifunctional space that marries tradition with modernity. Located near Fukuma Beach, this project highlights the original timber framework, previously concealed by less evocative renovations. By setting back the guesthouse wall, the design reveals the elegance of knotless cypress pillars and large domestic pine beams, allowing natural light to flood the interior through innovative glass roofing tiles. The resulting space is not merely a guesthouse and shop, but a narrative of restoration that respects and celebrates architectural heritage. The careful approach to renovation involved reinforcing the original structure's integrity while optimizing for usability. Non-structural pillars were removed, ensuring an unobstructed flow and enhancing the design's spatial experience. Structural plywood and braces were implemented to maintain load-bearing capacity without compromising aesthetic value. This project serves as a critical reminder of the potential that lies in rehabilitation—where architectural memory is not only preserved but also highlighted for new generations to appreciate. I invite industry peers to discuss the impact of such renovations on our communities and the environment. How can we further encourage sustainable practices in our architectural endeavors? Let’s continue to champion designs that reflect resilience, beauty, and sustainability in architecture. #Architecture #SustainableDesign #AEC #Renovation #HeritagePreservation #TsutsumiAndAssociates #DesignInnovation Image Source: designboom | architecture & design magazine
