Storytelling is part of who we are as humans, but in Africa, it holds a special place. It’s how we pass down history, share wisdom, and connect. Through parables, proverbs, and oral traditions, storytelling has always been a powerful way to keep our culture alive. But who gets to tell our stories? For a long time, the platforms shaping Africa’s narratives have been owned by others. And as I always say, whoever owns the mic owns the message. That’s why it’s so important for more Africans to own media platforms- not just to share our stories, but to do so authentically, on our own terms. Digital platforms are changing the game. Today, every one of us can be a storyteller. We no longer have to wait for permission to amplify our voices. We no longer need intermediaries to collect, curate and share our stories! I’m so thrilled about the work we’re doing at Storytelling and Leadership with global organizations and leaders from all sectors, from banking to engineering, to unlearn storytelling pitfalls (such as speaking so technically as subject matter experts that we lose people’s engagement along the way) and learn new skills (such as compelling and proven storytelling structures that can be applied to anything, from keynote speeches to PPT presentations). I completed the 'Ethical Storytelling: How To Write About Africa' course from Africa No Filter. It aims to help development communicators tell better stories about Africa instead of perpetuating harmful and stereotypical narratives. As someone from the Global North, I appreciated this course because it is necessary to start challenging the stories and images that are coming out of Africa. We, in the Global North, need to start questioning why we continue to write, film, photograph, etc., certain stories, instead of telling them that, "centre new voices, new heroes, and new stories with characters who have agency and stories that are told ethically." However, ethical is not just about the stories, but the whole process. This course has made me more aware of my own biases, and it has taught me that ethical storytelling is collaborative from the very beginning, all the way to the end.
