Last week, the Institute for Peace and Security Studies - IPSS hosted the #APSA Policy Dialogue Series-1: 'Emboldening APSA for Africans: Early Warning & Conflict Prevention'. This provided a platform for AU, Member States, CSO and think tanks to exchange on the APSA Impact Reports' key findings and recommendations. The APSA Impact Report assesses interventions of AU, RECs and RMs on conflict situations, in the framework of the African Peace and Security Architecture (#APSA). 📢 "The answer must be accountability.” At the 8th #Brussels Conference 'Supporting the Future of Syria and the region", Mr. Robert Petit, Head of the IIIM, emphasized the importance of justice and accountability for a sustainable peace in Syria. Highlighting the ongoing atrocities and impunity gap, he stated, “More than ever, the answer must be accountability...Perpetrators answering for their crimes before a Court of law should be the rule, not the exception." ⚖️ Mr. Petit thanked member states for their continued commitment to the IIIM's mandate. Justice and accountability require time and resources. Since it became operational in 2018, the IIIM has received 375 requests for assistance from 16 different jurisdictions and supported 261 of these requests, contributing to 192 distinct investigations into core international crimes committed in Syria. The IIIM is also preparing to support the ongoing case at the #ICJ regarding Syria’s obligations under the Convention against Torture. This support will take the form of a report, a version of which will be made public.
