    "Trump's New Story On Obamacare | HuffPost Latest News" https://lnkd.in/gAbKTR4S Jonathan Cohn at HuffPost claims President Trump's "saving Obamacare" claim during last night's debate was a "novel reinterpretation of history" and that "it wasn’t until Joe Biden became president in 2021, and Democrats won back control of Congress, that improvements to the law finally came". Many actuaries (including me) documented significant ACA improvements during Trump's presidency, and I noted the irony of administration's policy implications by crediting Donald Trump as "Obamacare's Unlikely Savior". https://lnkd.in/gJinCrPA The only questionable item that Mr. Cohn raises is whether the "saving claim" and the historical recollection are new sentiments expressed by Mr. Trump himself. I will let you form your own judgments. Below are unedited what he said during his presidency and what he said last night (the latter being the paragraphs in quotes). What we’ve done is we’ve really managed Obamacare — the remaining portion — we get rid of the bad part, but the remaining portion — really well. And you know, before I got involved, you know what was happening with the rates and Obamacare: They were going up at levels that nobody has ever seen before. We are managing it. "I inherited Obamacare because Democrats wouldn’t change it. They wouldn’t vote for it. They were unanimous. They wouldn’t vote to change it. If they would have done that, we would have had a much better plan than Obamacare. But the Democrats came up, they wouldn’t vote for it." And I had a decision to make. This was very important. I said to my people — and we have great people: Seema, Azar — I mean, great people that are so good at it. I said, ‘You know, I have a little problem: Do we manage it great until we get something much better or do we manage it poorly and say Obamacare is horrible?’ "I had a choice to make when I was president: Do I save it and make it as good as it can be? Never going to be great. Or do I let it rot? And I felt I had an obligation, even though politically it would have been good to just let it rot and let it go away. I decided ― and I told my people, the top people, and they’re very good people ― I have a lot of good people in this ― that administration. We read about the bad ones. We had some real bad ones, too. And so do they. They have really bad ones. The difference is they don’t get rid of them." And I said, ‘We’ve got to do the right thing. We’ve got to manage it really, really good.’ So it’s not great healthcare, but we’re managing it fantastically. And you don’t see all those stories about the rates going through the roof anymore because we know what we’re doing. "But let me just explain. I had a choice to make: Do I save it and make it as good as it can be or let it rot? And I saved it. I did the right thing."

    Any illusions that Donald J. Trump would back away from his last-minute embrace of RFK Jr. were shattered during his victory speech, when he assured his supporters that the anti-vaccine activist was “going to help make America healthy again.” What that means in practice is hazy. Will Kennedy be given a formal leadership role at the department of Health and Human Services or might he sit inside the White House as some sort of health czar? Regardless of the title he ends up with, it’s clear that Kennedy is enjoying an influence that could fundamentally undermine the tenets of evidence-backed medicine and public health during the second Trump administration.
