"The fear of Special Education Needs(SEN) in children is the beginning of Early Intervention" part #1 💛What I simply mean by the above statement is that parents who embark on early intervention (emphasis on early), are wise 💛Let me get something straight, SEN in children is not a disease. It is a challenge that can be overcome when the proper actions are put in motion 💛This post is not in anyway to scare you, or guilt trip you 💛Rather, I want to encourage you that even if your child is already experiencing these signs, there's hope as long as you stay positive and consistent with your consultatant's instructions 💛And if you have kids who are below 2 years or above 2 and haven't been assessed, please do, and with the right professional 💛The number of children who are presenting signs of developmental delays, behavioral challenges and learning difficulties is becoming increasingly alarming 💛The number can be drastically reduced when parents do what is right at the right time 💛A wise man once said, "delayed obedience is as good as disobedience (emphasis on delayed)" 💛That delay, that negligent behaviour, that "it's not that deep", that, ",it's probably nothing, could cost you years of stress, and unnecessary pressure and struggle on your child 💛Your best bet is Early Intervention 💛Watch out for part #2 in subsequent post😊 💛Guess what! Addressing Early Education and Child Care Expulsion is crucial. The recommendations in this paper highlight the need for Australia too, to implement changes across all Early Learning Services. As a professional Infant Mental Health Specialist, dedicated to preventing the exclusion of young children from education and care, I have been advocating for this change for many years. Over the past 8 years, Goodstart Early Learning has developed a program that provides teachers with training and support in trauma-informed teaching practices, tailored to each child. Our efforts have resulted in the inclusion of over 500, children nationwide, many of whom were previously excluded from other early learning services. Excluding a 3-year-old from care and education due to their inability to co or self-regulate is not acceptable in a first-world country. Children learn to co and self-regulate through healthy adult relationships, not isolation and shame. The practice of excluding young children should be eliminated from all early learning services' Behavior Management Policies and Procedures. To all professionals in Early Learning Services, Early Education, and Government, I urge you to read the recommendations outlined in this paper. I want to teach and explain, clearly and simply, why hitting children is harmful—to both the child and the adult. When children are physically hurt, they grow up with fear, pain, and the belief that others are out to harm them. This leads to a cycle of hurt: abused children often repeat the abuse as adults, harming others and themselves. The Impact of Hitting: • It causes shock, fear, and physical and emotional pain. • It teaches children that power and control come through violence. • It damages trust and creates shame and humiliation. Why Does This Happen? Many adults hit because they were hit as children. It feels "normal" because it has been passed down through generations, but that doesn’t make it right. It’s a system rooted in authoritarian control and the idea that "might makes right." Breaking the Cycle: To stop this harmful practice: 1. Adults must understand the harm. Imagine being hit whenever you make a mistake or say something wrong. Reflect on the pain, humiliation, and restriction it causes. 2. Imagine alternatives. Instead of using fear or control, reconnect with the creativity, love, and curiosity you had as a child. A Better Approach: When a child misbehaves, respond with understanding and cooperation instead of punishment: • Ask questions one-to-one or as a group: "What do you need for you to settle down?" "How can we fix this together?" "What should we do to make this work? " "Tell me. Let's write this down for all to see." "Now I want to see suggestions from you all." "What should we do to make this work so that we can carry on with our studies?" • Encourage solutions: Involve the child and others in finding a way forward. • Foster creativity and inspiration: Help children feel seen, heard, and valued. Misbehaviour can become a teaching moment. Instead of reacting with discipline, use it as an opportunity for growth. Invite ideas and create a supportive environment where everyone learns to work together. ___________________________________ This approach nurtures a child’s spirit and fosters love, cooperation, and creativity, breaking the cycle of fear and harm. Does early intervention work? Or Is it better to wait to see if the child will 'catch up' by staying in the mainstream classroom ? There is one mantra that works when one has a difficult choice to make.... DO MORE OF WHAT IS WORKING! AND CHANGE WHAT IS NOT WORKING! Early years(below 6 years) are foundation years and very critical for children to build the rest of their lives on! Why is it important? - during early years children mainly learn to build their social skills which they will use in later years as they grow. If children are struggling to cope during early years, then they face a huge challenge in later years, which then impacts their self esteem and self image. - during the foundation years, children learn to recognise and understand their own and others' emotions. They learn strategies to cope with all the ups and downs. In a healthy learning environment, they learn effective and efficient ways to self regulate and build social bonds. When children face developmental challenges, dealing with emotions may be a difficult and sometimes forgotten, area of development. - yes academic progress is important. However, social and emotional development is what translates into 'behaviour'.... Behaviour practiced over time becomes a 'habit'. So if this area is addressed later, rather than sooner, it becomes harder for the child and the environment to change. So definitely 'a stitch in time saves nine' is the mantra to follow. And yes you understood it right, early intervention is always the better choice!
