🌍 Breaking Down Barriers to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) at European Sustainability Week 2024 - a must see panel debate with an excellent view of state-of-play for CCS in Europe. During the European Sustainability Week 2024, key stakeholders gathered to discuss the future of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in achieving the EU's ambitious climate targets. The panel highlighted several critical points: Importance of CCS: CCS is essential to meeting our climate goals. With the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, it is a crucial technology for a sustainable future. Challenges and Solutions: Despite its importance, CCS faces several challenges, including high costs, regulatory hurdles, and public acceptance. The panel emphasized the need for a comprehensive regulatory framework, public-private partnerships, and increased funding to overcome these barriers. Collaboration Across Sectors: Collaboration is key. By bringing together various stakeholders, including NGOs, business associations, and corporate organizations, we can create a robust ecosystem to support CCS deployment. Technological and Regulatory Advances: The development of new technologies and the establishment of a clear regulatory framework are happening simultaneously. The EU's commitment to creating a single market for CO2 and the upcoming infrastructure package are significant steps forward. Future Outlook: Looking ahead, the panelists expressed optimism about the future of CCS. They believe that with continued effort, collaboration, and innovation, CCS can become as prevalent and successful as renewable energy technologies have become over the past two decades. The European Commission's commitment to accelerating CCS and addressing the associated challenges is a promising sign. Let's continue to work together to make CCS a cornerstone of our strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. We are proud to announce that the Science Based Targets initiative has officially validated our long-term SBTi targets to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050. This commitment includes significant absolute reductions of scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across various areas, including purchased goods and services, energy-related activities, upstream transportation, waste management, and end-of-life treatment of sold products. Our net-zero target approval complements our near-term emission reduction targets, confirmed in early 2024, which align with a 1.5-degree Celsius trajectory. In our near-term targets we aim to reduce: 🌎Our absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 54.6% 🌎The scope 3 emissions by 32.5% 🌎By fiscal year 2033, using a fiscal year 2022 baseline. These targets are a testament to our unwavering commitment to sustainability and an integral part of our sustainability strategy. 🌍✅ It's crucial to prioritize both environmental sustainability and economic viability. That's why AECDR, the Alliance of European Car Dealers and Repairers, is urging MEPs for technological neutrality in the upcoming vote on heavy-duty vehicle emissions. In this pivotal moment, we must ensure our regulations strike a balance between environmental responsibility and economic growth. Embracing technology neutrality is key to achieving our climate targets without stifling innovation or market dynamics. The European Parliament has the possibility to create a path forward by championing technology neutrality, ensuring equal opportunities for diverse emission reduction technologies. Of particular importance is the introduction of a carbon correction factor, incentivizing the use of renewable fuels like Biofuels, BioLNG, RFNBO, and more. Let's work together towards a sustainable future for the automotive industry! #AECDR #EnvironmentalSustainability #EconomicViability #HeavyDutyVehicleEmissions #TechnologyNeutrality #RenewableFuels #EURegulations #ClimateTargets #Innovation #MarketDynamics Massimo Artusi Gerardo Pérez Giménez Denise Panico Marta Blázquez Christian Hegel Peter Byrdal
