The findings of this cross-sectional survey suggest that care pathways of women with obstetric complications in Kampala often involve at least 2 formal providers and reflect possible inefficiencies in the referral process, including potential delays and unnecessary steps. https://lnkd.in/ecEbuGS5

🌼 Understanding Endometriosis as a Social Justice Issue in Kenya🌼 Endometriosis isn't just a medical condition; it's a challenge intertwined with gender inequality, health disparities, and economic barriers. In Kenya, where talking about menstrual health is often taboo, many women suffer in silence. This silence is compounded by limited access to specialized healthcare, especially for those in rural areas or facing economic hardship. The journey to diagnosis can take years, filled with pain not just from the condition itself but from being unheard. Endometriosis affects an estimated 1 in 10 women during their reproductive years, leading to severe pain, infertility, and profound impacts on mental, physical, and social well-being. 🔊 Here’s Where the Endometriosis Foundation of Kenya Steps In: - Raising Awareness: We're breaking the silence on endometriosis, educating the public and healthcare providers alike. - Advocacy: We're fighting for better healthcare policies and access, ensuring every woman's pain is taken seriously. - Support Services: Offering a hand to hold, we provide support and resources for those navigating this challenging condition through our private groups and #EndoBuddyProgramme - Research and Education: By backing research with our trusted partners and promoting education, we aim to demystify endometriosis and pioneer better treatments. 🌱 Join Us in Our Fight Against Endometriosis. Together, we can shine a light on this condition, pushing for a future where no woman in Kenya has to suffer in silence. It's time to make endometriosis a health priority, ensuring access to care and support for all. 💛 #SpreadTheYellow, support the cause, and stand in solidarity with endometriosis warriors across Kenya this month of March. “One of the most pervasive myths about menstruation in Ethiopia is that it is an indicator of commencement of sexual activity. Particularly in traditional, rural communities this can be extremely damaging and potentially dangerous for adolescent girls. A related belief is that menstruation is a sign of maturity and signifies that a girl is ready to be married...” UNICEF, May 2017. As we commemorate international menstrual hygiene day 2024 this week under the theme "A period friendly world", lets continue to work to debunk menstrual myths that endanger the wellbeing of women and girls and strive towards a period friendly Ethiopia. #IMHD2024 #internationalmenstrualhygieneday #priodfriendlyethiopia #periodfriendlyworld #ipas #ipasEthiopia

#WASH #EndOpenDefaecation Women are great movers especially in health and child care. Taking advantage of the 9th of the month women prayer session in @OkparaSquare in @Enugu I took the #WASH message there, particularly to end open defaecation, introduce SaTo pan toilet model by@wateraid and promoted by @WaterAidNigeria and @UNICEF_Nigeria @southsaharan among others. We also discussed the necessity of institutionalising @mobileToilets during events in our communities. These will form core discussions of @AugustMeeting this year. All this is thanks to my wonderful Honourable Commissioner for Gender. I know from example that if Igbo Women as a body decide for something, it is a done deal. I know that given the understanding of the repercussions of open defaecation on health, under-5 mortality rate, especially, toll on household finance and educational outcomes, women will rise as one and end it. And at the same time promote many sanitation businesses. I look forward to working with so many corporate bodies and institutions in Enugu and beyond. #SanitationForHealth

🔅 For humanity to progress, people must be counted, wherever they are and whoever they are – in all their diversity 🔅 To realize the rights and choices of those pushed to the margins of our societies, we have to count them – because everyone counts Powerful statements from Dr. Natalia Kanem, Executive Director, UNFPA on #WorldPopulationDay2024 Inclusive data is essential if we want to ensure progress for all, especially for #SRHR and #menstrualhealth #menstualhygiene This year, the menstrual health community has two important data reports to draw upon to inform our advocacy, on-ground actions, research and investments 🔴 Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition's LEAP Commodity Gap Analysis (access data and insights on menstrual health here: https://lnkd.in/gu-UsWsD) 🔴 JMP's latest WASH in School 2023 report (access it here: https://washdata.org/) These insights also tell us (see deck) that we need more inclusive data from more countries to identify where we are making progress, who is being left behind, and where we need to invest. We need to join forces to enable and support the use of proposed indicators for menstrual health and hygiene and gender responsive WASH, and share insights more widely. This research, led by Okoh Elizabeth et al., sheds light on a critical public health concern with significant consequences for women's well-being. The study analyzes data from the 2018 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 (𝗡𝗗𝗛𝗦) and reveals an alarming prevalence of IPV: 62.6% of surveyed women reported experiencing some form of violence from their partners. Emotional abuse was the most common type, followed by less severe and more severe physical violence, and sexual violence. Furthermore, the research identifies factors associated with an increased risk of IPV. Women residing in rural areas, partnered with controlling individuals, and belonging to lower socioeconomic groups face higher odds of experiencing violence. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers and healthcare professionals working to address IPV in Plateau State and similar settings. Socioeconomic empowerment programs, particularly for women in rural areas, alongside public awareness campaigns discouraging IPV, are crucial steps towards creating a safer environment for women.
