I don't get it, I really don't get it. The well respected Science Based Targets initiative climate action company has released a new report that indicates Scope 3 emissions will still be excluded to use carbon offsets to counter the emissions. Further than that, there has been the view that those companies that can't keep up (with the necessary reductions they signed up to) can drop out. Finally for the SBTI to comment that perhaps some shouldn't have joined in the first place is slightly incredulous. Isn't this elitist thinking? Basically it is not a case of not trying, but a case of "by our rules only" Lets see more collaboration on this and start to encourage everyone to make an effort! #sbti #carboncredits #carbonneutral

Commitment to climate protection: DEKRA climate targets in line with 1.5 °C We are pleased that the DEKRA climate targets have been successfully validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)! SBTi is an initiative that supports companies in setting emission reduction targets based on scientific evidence in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement. With this, DEKRA commits to the goal of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5°C. DEKRA joined the "Business Ambition for 1.5°C" in 2021, a global initiative of the United Nations Global Compact, the Science Based Targets initiative, and the We Mean Business Coalition. The climate target validated by the SBTi is a further milestone for DEKRA's climate strategy and underlines the company's ongoing commitment to greater climate and environmental protection. Our strategy at a glance: - Confirmation of successful climate management by the CDP rating (current score "B") - Greenhouse gas reduction target in line with the 1.5°C target - Measures for more climate protection: 100% renewable electricity in ~60 countries worldwide by 2025, introduction of an internal carbon price - Expert services related to sustainability and decarbonization in all business areas Find out more about our climate targets and how we are shaping a better future together: https://lnkd.in/em-_hdQS #DEKRA #ClimateProtection #SBTi #Sustainability

The transport sector is Europe's highest emitting sector, accounting for a quarter of the #GHG #emissions. To slash emissions, #biodiesel blends in #road, #aviation, and #maritime #transport will be needed, alongside other technologies 🚛 🚢 ✈ What is needed to make that happen? 📖 Read the EBB Manifesto for a “Made in Europe” transition towards carbon-neutral transport on https://lnkd.in/enMU9vVP

🗞️ Driving the news: The #Guardian reports on a concerning forecast by Transport & Environment (T&E) indicating that, without significant policy changes, #transportemissions could constitute nearly half of Europe's total #greenhousegasemissions by 2030 • This sector's emissions have increased by 26% since 1990, contrasting with reductions in other areas 🔭 The context: Despite the overall decrease in emissions across #Europe, the transport sector's emissions have risen due to increasing car pollution and a growing demand for flights • T&E's analysis suggests that transport emissions in Europe have peaked, but the pace of #decarbonisation in this sector lags significantly behind others like electricity and industry 🌍 Why it matters for the planet: The transport sector's lagging progress in reducing emissions poses a significant challenge to Europe's climate goals • As it stands, this sector's emissions are outpacing reductions elsewhere, potentially comprising 44% of the continent's total emissions by 2030, undermining efforts to achieve climate neutrality ⏭️ What's next: The report urges policymakers to take more aggressive actions to curb the transport sector's emissions • Recommendations include accelerating the transition to electric vehicles, promoting energy efficiency in shipping, and reducing the expansion of airports and roads 💬 One quote: "Transport was the ‘problem child’ of Europe’s climate efforts," (William Todts, executive director of T&E)

Reporting on if “carbon trading systems reduce global emissions, or are they little more than #greenwashing,” the Massachusetts Institute of Technology highlighted the #CarbonOffsetting and Reduction Scheme for International #Aviation (CORSIA), noting that “it’s a point for optimism because they issued very tough guidelines as to what projects are eligible and what projects are not.” CORSIA was created by the International Civil Aviation Organization's member states in 2016, and is being implemented by them under Annex 16 of the Chicago Convention. We are deploying a wide range of implementation and capacity building initiatives to support our 193 member states to keep progress on-track.

The debate over updates to the Science Based Targets initiative’s #NetZero standard is one of the most important things happening in #sustainability right now. Under the current guidelines, it’s extraordinarily difficult for companies to reach net-zero #Scope3 emissions. Reform is needed. As SBTi’s own analysis has found, #CarbonCredits are often flawed and need to improve in quality if they’re to become a credible way for tackling a company’s environmental footprint. It’s encouraging that SBTi is also exploring different ways to measure whether a business’ value chain is aligned with climate goals. SBTi is pursuing a thoughtful, comprehensive process for updating its standards, and I look forward to the draft that’s coming later this year.

The use of Offsets has been a cornerstone of Aviation policy towards reducing the impact on climate by the industry. I have always been at least skeptical but mostly outright anti the use. But proof? Well try this on for size. https://lnkd.in/gxzcTiZ2 It is high time we step up to a better solutions that dumping.

The Climate Change Committee no longer believes that the Scottish Government will meet its statutory 2030 goal to reduce emissions by 75%. Inevitable given the delays in translating targets to delivery plans but depressing news to wake up to nonetheless. On transport, Scotland’s highest emitting sector, the CCC highlight: > Emissions from surface transport rose by 15% in 2021, but remain 10% below 2019 levels. > Car-kilometres increased in 2021 following the pandemic but remain 6% below 2019 levels. A clear strategy on how Scotland will achieve its key 20% reduction in car-kilometres travelled target by 2030 is still missing. > Electric car and van sales are off track, vans significantly so, with 10.5% of new car and 2.0% of new van sales being electric in 2022. Both lower than the UK as a whole. > There is no strategy for decarbonising aviation in Scotland and no progress in addressing aviation demand growth. For context, it is good to look at where the CCC consider UK government action is causing the highest risk to these targets. These include insufficiently ambitious new vehicle regulation (eg the lack of action to address trends towards heavier cars) and the fact aviation demand is explicitly not being pursued. The CCC assesses the UK government reluctance to consider demand-side measures a medium risk to Scotland’s mode shift and demand reduction policies as it could hinder public acceptance. Personally, I’d rate this higher. As most targets tends to relate to territorial emissions, it is also important to note that Scotland has higher per capita consumption emissions than the rest of the UK and these only fell by 1% in 2019. Consumption emissions are 64% higher than Scotland’s 2019 territorial emissions. #transport #climate #scotland
