What is a school mission and why is it important? 🤔 Every school has a mission. It is the foundation. But how do we bring it to life? How do we ensure it is the core of what we strive to achieve and not a series of words written in the school newsletter? A mission is simple. Why do we exist? What impact do you want to make as an educational institute? But how do you turn that into actionable practice? 1️⃣ Explore current research: It helps you see where you are and what steps you need to take as a school community to strive for success. Learning by Doing by Richard DuFour and his colleagues and Collaborative Teams that Work are go-to guides that can help you reshape your practice and build your ultimate Professional Learning Community. 2️⃣ Develop and strengthen staff's beliefs about overcoming challenges that impact student learning. A common thread of challenges come from the strength of Professional Learning Community. As a leader, it is vital we support our staff and our students. It is how you break through the barriers that hold you back as a school. 3️⃣ Involve your staff to ensure the mission is lived daily. Support, challenge, coach and advocate. It's not about getting everyone together to create a mission. It is about making a mission that unties everyone around the school's purpose and compels others to integrate it into their every day practice. As a principal, one of the most impactful places I can be is in the classroom. This week I was reminded of the invaluable insights gained when we step into the learning environment. There’s no substitute for firsthand experience when it comes to understanding the dynamics between teachers and students (Whilst mindful of the fact that atmosphere does change when admin steps into a classroom 🫣). 🔸Reflecting on a previous post about coaching teachers, I find that the most meaningful feedback comes when I've witnessed the teaching process in action. Observing the nuances of instruction, the engagement of students, and the atmosphere of the classroom provides a depth of understanding that’s essential when guiding and supporting our educators. 🔹Being in the classroom isn’t just about evaluation—it’s about #Connection. It reinforces the decisions we make as leaders, ensuring they are grounded in the realities of daily instruction. After all, every policy, every initiative, and every change we implement ultimately impacts the classroom. That’s why it's crucial that our decisions are informed by what we see, hear, and feel in those moments of observation. 🔸Continuing to be present in classrooms keeps us connected to the heart of our work—our students and teachers. It’s a reminder that leadership isn’t just about directing from afar but about being an integral part of the educational journey. 🔹Seeing the trending #MobileDesks that administrators have been adapting to, it is becoming more evident that being less in the office and more on the floor is where you need to be to make more informed decisions, as well as offer support to your educators and staff, of course. 💬 How do you feel about conducting observations? Does it still generate a sense of anxiety amongst your teaching faculty? #EducationalLeadership #ClassroomObservation #TeacherSupport #InstructionalLeadership #SchoolCommunity

From Classroom to Consulting: My Journey 🌟 Teaching has always been my passion, and after 10 amazing years in the classroom, I realized that my calling was not just to teach students, but to empower new educators. 🌱✨ As the lead on my campus, a mentor teacher to first-year educators and college students, and the MTSS lead, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges that new teachers face. I’ve led professional development sessions, been part of the leadership team, and observed countless classrooms. Despite being more than qualified as an instructional coach, the twisted ways of administration kept me from that role. Instead, my knowledge and skillset were utilized in other ways. 📚🎓 So, I took my own advice: “If they won’t let you in the room, create your own.” That’s why I started MentorMinds Consulting – to bridge that gap. With a focus on small group instruction, I aim to equip new teachers with the tools and confidence they need to create student-centered, data-driven classrooms. 💪❤️ Join me in this journey to make a difference, one classroom at a time. If you’re ready to transform your classroom and make a difference in student lives, let’s connect. ✨#EducationConsultant #FirstYearTeachers #SmallGroupInstruction #MentorMinds #TeachingJourney #EducationMatters #PDLeader #CampusLeadership #MTSSLead #EmpoweringEducators

Who’s the best person to manage your teachers’ professional development? Ben Knight from Oxford University Press explored this question during the closing plenary at the #EaqualsConference in #Tallinn. We know every teacher is different. Each educator is in the best position to judge what they need to work on, know what professional development activities are helpful, set out their goals, plan their time for PD, etc. So why do many teachers struggle when they’re left to manage their PD on their own? 🚀 This session delved into the various obstacles to self-directed professional development and discussed what schools could do to help their teachers overcome them. Strategies such as personalized coaching, peer-to-peer mentoring, tailored workshops, and access to resources were explored. Ben also explored a new approach that supported teachers to become leaders of their own professional development journey. 🎓 What strategies have you found most effective in fostering a culture of continuous professional development among educators in your organization? Share your comments! #Eaquals #TeacherPD #ProfessionalDevelopment

Tips and Tools with The Edu Concierge Administration, what if you were truly intentional in creating a supportive and dynamic school culture? Here are three strategies to help you get there: Regular Check-Ins: Keep the dialogue flowing! Schedule regular meetings with teachers to ensure they feel heard and supported. 💬 Example: Bi-weekly "Feedback Fridays" where teachers can voice their concerns and celebrate wins. Professional Learning Communities (PLCs): Encourage teamwork and shared growth. Example: Establish grade-level PLCs that meet weekly to discuss instructional strategies and student progress. Creative Celebrations and Recognition: Think outside the box for recognition! Example: Launch a "Classroom Innovator Award" where teachers are celebrated for creative classroom setups or unique teaching methods. Reward them with a fun, custom-made trophy and a feature on the school's social media. Ready to take action? Building a Positive School Culture: A Call to Senior Managers In today’s educational landscape, fostering a positive school culture is more crucial than ever. As senior managers, you have the unique opportunity to lead this transformation, creating an environment where both students and staff can thrive. Why Focus on School Culture? A positive school culture promotes emotional well-being, enhances student engagement, and reduces staff turnover. It creates a sense of belonging and safety, allowing everyone to reach their full potential. When students feel supported, they’re more likely to succeed academically and socially. What Does a Positive School Culture Look Like? A thriving school culture is characterised by open communication, mutual respect, and a commitment to social and emotional learning. It encourages collaboration among staff and fosters strong relationships between educators and students. How Can We Achieve This? 1. One-on-One Mentoring: Implement mentoring programs that connect experienced staff with newer teachers. This not only builds professional relationships but also promotes a culture of continuous learning. 2. Professional Development: Invest in ongoing training focused on emotional intelligence and effective classroom management strategies. Workshops can empower educators to manage their emotions and develop resilience, which they can then model for their students. 3. Inclusive Practices: Ensure that all voices within the school community are heard. Solicit feedback from staff, students, and parents to create a culture of inclusivity and shared ownership. 4. Celebrate Achievements: Recognise both small and large successes within the school community. Celebrating achievements helps reinforce positive behaviors and fosters a sense of pride among students and staff. As senior managers, your leadership is vital in shaping a positive school culture. Together, we can create an environment that nurtures every individual's growth and well-being, ultimately leading to a more successful educational experience for all. Let’s commit to this important journey and make a lasting impact in our schools! #SchoolCulture #Leadership #Education #EmotionalIntelligence #ProfessionalDevelopment #PositiveEnvironment
