Authoritative leadership is obsolete 🤯 #empoweringleadership #humancenteredleadership “Authoritative leadership—using authority, pressure, and influence to get things done—has been practiced in organizations for decades, as anyone who has held a job knows. It has also been a fixture in our survey from the outset, and we predicted that it would remain a practice that drives leadership. But in one of the biggest changes we’ve seen in the OHI, our prediction was not supported. Authoritative leadership does not predict organizational health and no longer appears in our OHI model.” ___ The new data tell us that there is no situation in which leaders need to follow the old maxim “Do it because I said so.” In this era of disruption, leaders can be challenging and decisive while being supportive, consultative, and empowering. ___ Who is going to tell them? ✋

According to a study by McKinsey, authoritative leadership is no longer an effective way to get things done. Empowering and decisive leadership is what makes an organization healthy according to the same study. A similar conclusion was drawn after a study by Notion Ltd a few years ago. A command-and-control style leadership has a negative effect on the organization’s performance. Instead, an example of empowering leadership style is one where a leader seeks out coachable moments throughout the day. The more leaders practice coaching as a leadership style, the more their team feels empowered. We at STAR® Coach Leadership refer to this as Operational Coaching®. A leadership style that is new to North America.
