The Australian government is taking decisive action to address the growing issue of greenwashing in the agriculture sector. New proposed rules aim to combat misleading environmental claims and promote greater transparency for consumers. Greenwashing has become a major problem, with many businesses making dubious assertions about their sustainability and carbon offset efforts. These deceptive practices have eroded consumer trust and put companies genuinely embracing eco-friendly practices at an unfair disadvantage. However, the forthcoming regulations could help turn the tide. By providing clearer guidelines for making environmental claims and imposing penalties for false or unsubstantiated statements, the rules seek to ensure that any sustainability progress being touted is real and verifiable. This is a crucial step for the long-term health of the agriculture industry and the environment. Maintaining consumer confidence in green claims is essential as the sector works to improve its sustainability and reduce its environmental impact. While the issue is complex, these new transparency measures represent an important effort to combat greenwashing and uphold the integrity of the industry's environmental commitments.

As of 2025, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive will require large companies and listed SMEs in the EU to report on their sustainability impacts, risks, and opportunities. Agri-food companies and upstream farmers will be directly and indirectly affected due to the substantial sustainability impacts of farming. Companies that prepare for the #CSRD and assess their sustainability impacts and risks today can turn this administrative burden into an opportunity for market positioning and differentiation. #RaboResearch

I say organizations should prepare now for #EUDR, so they have already a good piece of their homework done for when #CSDDD, #DigitalProductPassport, etc. will become mandatory down the line
Navigating the New Era of Sustainability Regulations 🌳 🌍 The EU’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is set to take effect at the end of 2024, requiring companies selling certain commodities in the EU to prove their supply chains don’t contribute to global deforestation. This is creating challenges for multinationals, as the EU faces pushback not just from the U.S., but also some member states and other producing countries over definitions and data used in the regulation. Our COO, Tobias Grabler explains, “The EU-US standoff over deforestation may seem like politics, but for companies, knowing your supply chain is mission-critical. With new regulations like the EUDR, you’ll need granular data - even geospatial data - to prove your materials aren’t linked to deforestation. Compliance is key, no matter how the policy debates play out.” While meeting these new data and reporting requirements may seem daunting, it is a necessary step for companies. As Tobias states, “The costs of compliance are far outweighed by the potential fines/penalties for non-compliance. Businesses that are proactively aligning with evolving sustainability directives like EUDR will be well-positioned to also fulfill the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) that is coming anyways, so do it now for EUDR already and lay out the ground work. Ultimately, global supply chains will need to disclose the precise geolocation of their raw material sources to stay compliant.” Navigating the complex regulatory landscape around deforestation, ESG, and supply chain sustainability is critical for global businesses. Getting ahead of these shifts is key to maintaining market access and brand reputation. 🌱🌍 Check out this article from Forbes for more insights: https://lnkd.in/eX5SCavh 🤝 Connect with our team today to explore how Topo can help you! #TopoSolutions #sustainability #ESG #deforestation #regulation #supplychain #EUDR

Global impact of EU sustainability legislation for the poultry sector and beyond Even for European companies it is still a shadowy thing, the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) arising from the European Green Deal and its accompanying Financing Sustainable Growth action plan. However, this legislation – which stipulates that an external accountant must provide ‘assurance’ on sustainability reporting – will have major consequences for Europe and beyond. #Europe #Sustainability #Legislation #Economy

Scaling Sustainability in Palm Oil: Evolving Standards for Future Impact Two decades after its creation, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) continues to push sustainability standards for the global palm oil industry in response to growing climate challenges. With the latest revisions to its Principles & Criteria and Independent Smallholder Standards, RSPO has strengthened requirements around human rights, environmental stewardship, and smallholder inclusivity. A notable addition is RSPO’s digital platform, ‘PRISMA’, enabling transparent data-sharing of key sustainability metrics throughout the supply chain. This evolution in certification, driven by multi-stakeholder collaboration, sets the stage for a sustainable future in palm oil production.
