The so-called “enrollment cliff” has led to a 15% drop in college enrollment since 2011. This represents a seismic shift in the demographics of potential college students and their access to higher education. Richard Phillips, Dean of the Georgia State University - J. Mack Robinson College of Business, articulates the crux of the issue: “There’s a great concern in management education these days as to where the new revenue streams are going to come from…and the sustainability of the enterprise in many cases is being threatened.” This statement underscores the urgency for innovative strategies that go beyond traditional revenue models. Georgia State University serves as an inspiring example, whose success in attracting and retaining traditionally underserved populations serves as both a beacon of social good and a strategic approach to generating essential new revenue streams. Phillips highlights the potential in “historically untapped markets” as a means to counterbalance downward trends. This approach not only addresses the immediate financial challenges but also aligns with the broader mission of inclusivity and equity in higher education. Read more about the conversation between Eduvantis' President Tim Westerbeck and Richard Phillips, which sheds light on the stark disparities in college attendance and success rates across socioeconomic lines. https://lnkd.in/eSAY7iRx #HigherEd #EnrollmentCliff #InnovativeStrategies

Hispanic students make up 51.67% of the students enrolled in the California Community College System; yet Hispanics/Latinos make up only 24.49% of the administrators and 20.08% of the tenured/tenure track faculty. Approximately 70% of all California Community College students never achieve their stated goal. Perhaps if Hispanic/Latino students saw more faculty and staff that looked like them, their success rates would improve. With the growing rate of Hispanic/Latino children in the U.S., it is imperative that they see role models that look like them in the teaching ranks in K-12 and on into Higher Education.

Our new study, with Christina Weiland, Jennifer K. Duer, Meghan McCormick, Allison Friedman-Krauss, Mirjana Pralica, Samantha Xia & Shira Mattera highlights that strong policies are needed to ensure that private provider and public school classrooms have comparable quality and child outcomes. The findings underscore the need for further research and policy focus to ensure equitable, high-quality Pre-K access and to narrow opportunity gaps before kindergarten entry. https://lnkd.in/eZ_6aMsZ

🎓 Navigating the Challenges of Higher Ed in 2024 Higher education is at a crossroads. As we face declining enrollment, shifting demographics, and increasing questions about the value of a degree, institutions must think creatively about how to stay relevant and accessible. 💡 One of the biggest trends we're seeing is the need for personalized learning experiences. Students are seeking flexibility, whether through hybrid learning models, micro-credentials, or stackable degree pathways that cater to their unique goals. At the same time, we’re tasked with balancing these innovations with maintaining equity and inclusion, ensuring every student—regardless of background—has access to the support and resources they need to thrive. These shifts aren’t just challenges; they’re opportunities. What trends are you seeing in higher education? How are your institutions responding? Let’s share insights and ideas! #HigherEducation #Trends #Innovation #Equity

Alarming data in new Gallup poll shows only 36% of Americans have confidence in higher education. The dimming view of whether college is worth the time and money cuts across all demographics — including gender, age and political affiliation. Almost one-third of respondents say college is “too expensive,” while 24% feel students are not being properly educated or taught what they need to succeed. Colleges have brought some of this on themselves with unjustifiably high prices, out-of-date subject matter and teaching methods, silos of knowledge instead of integrated learning and the inability to make timely changes that reflect the dynamic nature of the 21st century. As with any product or service that is overpriced and below customer expectations, the value is becoming harder for many to see and the culture of many colleges and universities remains captive in the early 20th century at best. https://lnkd.in/eHgk2VRm

Declining enrollments, shifting demographics, and wavering confidence define higher education's current challenges. My focus remains on collaborative problem-solving. Policymakers and institutions have an opportunity to explore pragmatic solutions for sustained funding, program diversification, and increased responsiveness to student needs. Navigating these issues collectively will shape a more resilient and adaptive higher education system. #HigherEducation #ProblemSolving #Adapt

What do we mean by "traditional" vs. "non-traditional" students? Students' changing demographics, needs and habits make the line between the two less than crystal clear. But it's still important to understand what students mean when they self-identify. https://lnkd.in/e5Vmb8w3
