There is a lot to be learned this week at #OpenTextWorld. For example, the OpenText IT Operations Cloud keynote focused on how OpenText elevates the potential of #ITOPs, so you can move faster without sacrificing reliability.  #CloudOps #automation

Is AWS greenwashing? Hrm... Maybe it's just their sales and account managers with old information on things more technically granular than they have time to investigate. Regardless, I agree that keeping environmental sustainability in the brain and calling out BS is absolutely necessary. Two things I learned from the comments: 1. I had no idea that the W3C was drafting some web sustainability guidelines. That's pretty dang cool! https://lnkd.in/gcuyKhsz 2. There's a Python pip package you can add to your cloud or local AI apps to see the estimated CO2 used and also give recommendations on how to optimize. I wonder if there are other libraries like this out there: https://codecarbon.io/ After the fact sustainability optimizations are truly an uphill battle, but they impact us all and are well worth it. I'm glad people are out there taking the steps!

Another day, another nonsense greenwashing post from AWS To be clear many customers will not reduce their emissions moving to AWS. For many the reverse is true and this type of misleading content needs to stop. As an example a US company we recently assessed increased their emissions by 650% by moving to AWS, despite their account team in the RFP claiming an 88% reduction (with no facts or substance). I’d be happier if AWS fixed their deeply misleading carbon reporting that somehow misses up to 99% of their emissions, such as: 1) No clarity on whether they include scope 1 2) Zeroing scope 2 if they have PPAs in place (against best practise) 3) Ignoring scope 3 (0% included) 4) Using aged and woefully inaccurate carbon intensity metrics 5) Reporting at country level only to hide their more inefficient data centres Given that they employ some of the smartest people on the planet, I can only assume that this is now a deliberate strategy to hide the bad news. In the 2.5 years since they launched their capability the biggest enhancement has been the ability to export a CSV of the made up numbers. For clarity, I’m not saying cloud is bad. My point is that everyone needs to take accountability and it’s time for honest transparency. Deliberately misleading customers and using sustainability to drive revenue growth has to stop, it is criminal and damaging the planet. #greenwashing #aws #scope3
