I was pleased to contribute my thoughts to the Discoverer newsletter about lessons I have learnt through my life and career. Re No. 9 - Be a Geoff Stewart APM (not a Karen), as he is one of the WAPol's great leaders and the force behind the newsletter and regular leadership virtual meetups.
My ten key insights:
* Be open-minded and open-hearted - it’s the basis for a full and interesting life.
* You can push yourself hard when focused and determined, but your mind and/or body will send you warning signals when you’ve pushed too far - listen because ignoring them will be at your peril.
* Have awkward and difficult conversations early - a minor issue is much easier to fix than a large and complex one.
* Practice gratitude - it flips the switch from a deficit to an abundant mindset.
* At frequent junctures, ask yourself, ‘If this is as good as life gets, is that OK?’ - You might be surprised that it is; if it’s not, be clear on why the next goals (that always come with sacrifices) are so important.
* Ask for help - you’ll be surprised how many people are willing to help or provide advice.
* Kindness costs nothing - but it can mean everything to someone.
* Live your life in the moment - one day might never come.
* Be a Geoff - a role model who walks the talk even when no one is watching.
* Remember, you are enough! - I never felt that I was enough and continued to strive to be more, better, and better. My achievements always fell short of the expectations I had of myself. With a mindset of never being, having or achieving enough - a sense of enoughness, contentment as it were, continued to evade me. Enoughness is about shifting to acknowledging when you are enough, have enough and have achieved enough - a simple yet powerful concept.
“When it comes to leading change, often the focus is on strategy, operations, functionality, processes, even locations. We need to remember change is first and foremost a human initiative. You can’t have change without people, and change is constant. It’s about the interaction with individuals within an organization.”
