Great panel happening International Masters of Gaming Law conference right now moderated by Jeff Ifrah discussing sports integrity in the betting context - something that was shared that I hope everyone keeps in mind: before legalization, no illegal bookmaker was out there alerting customers and leagues when matchfixing or other illegal activity was occurring. They also weren’t out there delivering problem gambling resources to players when they needed it. If we see an uptick in identification of suspicious activity in sports in the post-legalization era, it’s because we’re actually identifying it and calling it out. The system is working. The same concept will apply to igaming - pulling people out of the THRIVING black market will let us provide consumer protections and problem gambling resources that no offshore site is providing now. The highest likelihood of cannibalization with legalized igaming is of the black market.
