#Researchers have long been inspired by the #brain's ability to process information quickly and efficiently, which has led to the development of machine learning algorithms and specialized hardware mimicking brain-like functions. One of the biggest challenges, However, has been translating the most commonly used deep learning method, the backpropagation algorithm, to hardware that functions like biological neurons—known as #neuromorphic hardware. This study takes a significant step forward by creating a #New version of the backpropagation algorithm designed specifically for #spikingneuralnetworks (SNNs) implemented on Intel's Loihi neuromorphic processor. These spiking neurons, much like brain cells, communicate by sending bursts of electrical signals, offering faster and more energy-efficient computing. For the #first time, the researchers demonstrate a fully on-chip system capable of learning using backpropagation without needing a traditional computer. The team built a three-layer network that learned to recognize images of handwritten digits and clothing items from popular datasets like #MNIST and Fashion MNIST, showing accuracy competitive with other methods. This work paves the way for more advanced neuromorphic processors to be used in real-world applications, especially in areas requiring low-power, low-latency computing, such as edge devices, where rapid decision-making is critical. | #nnishiai #ai #machinelearning #neuromorphiccomputing #Backpropagation #neurons #cognition #EvolutionaryComputing

Consciosness vs Intelligence Intelligence is the ability to solve problems - to sustain survivability - in an ever changing world. Consciousness is the capability to feel that one is alive (not just know it). Intelligence is computable (it seems) using a Turing Machine, i.e., Digital Computers. Consciousness too is computable as in the case of humans. We do not yet know if it is computable with Digital Computers. “The truth” seems to be much more than setting a Boolean variable. Robots that can feel beyond simply sensing through sensors seems beyond reach at the moment. But it is a good area to start thinking about for researchers.

Elon Musk is investing heavily in science and modern technology A device for the blind to see, even if it is from birth, has been built by him. The Blindsight device from Neuralink will enable even those who have lost both eyes and their optic nerve to see. Provided the visual cortex is intact, it will even enable those who have been blind from birth to see for the first time. To set expectations correctly, the vision will be at first be low resolution, like Atari graphics, but eventually it has the potential be better than natural vision and enable you to see in infrared, ultraviolet or even radar wavelengths, like Geordi La Forge.
