Devfest Auckland Speaker Spotlight: Isaac Udy is an experienced Android engineer with nearly a decade in the industry. Throughout his career, he has worked with teams of all sizes and discovered a deep passion for improving engineering effectiveness within organizations. Over the past three years, Isaac has made significant contributions to platform and enablement teams at Xero and ANZ, where he's built developer tools, provided architectural guidance, and spent many hours pair programming. His interests span navigation, architecture, testing, developer experience, and modularization. Isaac is always eager to engage in discussions and hear about your own projects, so don't hesitate to strike up a conversation! At Devfest Auckland 2024, Isaac will delve into the world of code generation in Android. He will explore how, as software engineers, we often rely on repetitive and mundane boilerplate code, which third-party libraries like Dagger/Hilt or Room help mitigate through code generation. While code generation may initially seem like a mysterious or advanced concept, Isaac will demonstrate that it’s an accessible tool anyone can leverage to solve problems and boost productivity. In this session, Isaac will cover the fundamentals of code generation on Android, the tools you can use, and the types of problems it can solve. He’ll also share practical tips and tricks, ensuring you leave the session confident and ready to experiment with code generation in your own projects! “Is No-Code Really That Cost-Effective? The True Price of No-Code Solutions 💡” No-code is often praised for being quick, accessible, and *budget-friendly. But is it really as cost-effective as everyone says? Let’s break it down: 1️⃣ Subscription Fees Add Up Most no-code platforms operate on a subscription model. As your app grows, so do your costs. Premium features, higher user limits, and scaling capabilities come at a price. ⤷ Tip: Always check the pricing tiers and future-proof your budget. 2️⃣ Hidden Limitations = Hidden Costs What happens when your app outgrows the no-code platform’s capabilities? Transitioning to a custom-built solution can be costly. Migrating data, redesigning features, and hiring developers could offset initial savings. ⤷ Plan ahead: Make sure your no-code tool supports scalability or prepare for the long-term investment. 3️⃣ The Learning Curve No-code isn’t just plug-and-play. There’s still a learning curve, especially for more complex functionalities. Time spent learning could mean delayed project timelines, translating to indirect costs. ⤷ Pro tip: Invest in learning resources to minimize time spent figuring things out. The bottom line? No-code can be cost-effective, but only when you understand the true costs and plan accordingly. P.S. Have you experienced unexpected costs in your no-code journey? Share your story below! 👇

Day 3 of 90. The second limiting belief for aspiring developers to release is "I need to know how to code to build my dream software." With the current pace of AI and the maturity of tools like FlutterFlow and SmartSuite, this is no longer true. Most NoCode tools don't even need code (this is why they are called "NoCode" =D). And if you do need to write code, AI can do it for you! Don't believe me? Dan S. built an entire app in a day using FlutterFlow, BuildShip, and Openformat. The man was NOT a developer. When he told his friends he'd built something they didn't believe him. Haha! Kaitlin Pierce doesn't know how to write code, but she still builds entire functional apps for colleges and her work using SmartSuite. Finally, my brother Rosson Long can read code and write very little (he does NOT enjoy programming nearly as much as me), AND he is without a doubt the best app designer and builder that I know. 10 years ago, knowing how to code might have been necessary to build your dream. But today, it is no longer a requirement. What other challenges, frustrations, or fears do you have regarding building your dream software? Comment on this post or send them to me in a DM! Let's obliterate them together! Jessica Romero Tara Darbyshire Jon Darbyshire Harini Janakiraman 🎧 Eric Riddoch 👨🏻💻 Eric Schofield J. Darin Long Michele Long
