I spend a lot of time thinking about how strategic communicators can drive societal and environmental regeneration. It's the thing that's held me into this professional field over the years (and probably the thing that surprises people outside of PR and comms the most about what the job is, or can be). I love the way the field of PR and communications is evolving into such a powerful force for good. Not just 'less bad' but active, positive change.

How can PR firms become more sustainable? The PR industry has a tremendous opportunity to confidently lead the charge towards sustainability. Strategies may vary between companies, but what are the advantages? Narda Shirley, our co-CEO, shared her thoughts on the many benefits of B Corp certification in the latest edition of CIPR's Influence magazine: "Today, when it comes to requests for proposals (RFPs), many clients have started to ask about what your environmental management systems are like. Some bigger clients send out questionnaires. If you're a smaller company that's been through B Corp certification, you'll have lots of data in a way you wouldn't have otherwise had… It's helped raise the bar [meaning] we can operate alongside companies much bigger than us." Sergio Vazzoler, Co-founder and Director of Strategies and Institutional Relations at Amapola, member of the ''Declaration of green communication and Green Responsibility'' answered important topic of ESG, and thoughts on this historical declaration. Read the answers to his questions below. Why do you think ESG is important? ''I think that ESG factors are a fundamental asset for transforming the current economic and social model of companies: rights, social equity, and people's well-being acquire a new centrality in corporate governance together with management aimed at reducing environmental impact and creating new opportunities in a sustainable way.'' ESG standards represent a new innovation in business and new standards, do you consider them useful, and why? ''Certainly, the new standards represent a fundamental lever for harmonizing the process of sustainable transformation of companies. This process must be accompanied by a parallel commitment to cultural dissemination within organizations to avoid embarking on an ESG path of simple compliance with regulations.'' In what way will ESG standards affect the communication industry and what benefits can it derive? ''ESG standards have a deep impact on the communication industry, which must find a “modus operandi” consistent with the historical function of facilitating relationships inside and outside corporate organizations. The communication industry can take advantage to provide innovative services that meet the needs of the market in terms of reputation and competitiveness. The success of brands is closely linked to ESG strategy and the creation of shared value thanks to the strategic role of sustainability communication.'' You are a member of the group that brought out the historical document novel: ''Declaration of green communication and green responsibility'', what does working on this declaration mean to you? ''Working together on the ''Declaration of green communication and green responsibility'' is an extraordinary opportunity for me to contribute to the cultural dissemination of responsible communication in the environmental field, today more than ever necessary to respond responsibly to the drifts of fake news and manipulations. But responsible communication is equally essential to help all those organizations that struggle to become aware of the challenges of the climate crisis and the ESG turnaround: active listening, engaging people and authentic dissemination are the pillars of responsible communication.'' We asked Aslihan Guven, a member of the Roman Declaration of Green Communication Responsibility, What is the responsibility of the public relations industry in green communication? Green communication refers to the strategic use of communication to promote social responsibility and environmental sustainability while reaching target audiences and desired outcomes. As 2024 emerges as the warmest year on record, the urgency of addressing climate change is undeniable. Despite broken promises from governments on carbon-cutting, many sincere initiatives are struggling for climate justice. And that’s where the PR industry assumes a pivotal role. It has the power to dismantle the facade of “greenwashing” and reinforce ethical standards that genuinely reflect the pressing concerns of our time, particularly the alarming levels of climate change. PR practitioners, equipped with the tools of persuasive communication, can craft messages that ignite awareness and catalyze transformative changes in human behavior to do our part collectively to cut on carbon emissions. The public relations industry has the potential to set the agenda for climate justice and mobilize the masses to rise up to the existential challenge of climate action.
