Is there a sport more brutal psychologically than golf? Is this why it's so popular amongst the business fraternity? Such a shame for Rory McIlroy to miss 2 short puts when leading the US Open, however every club🏌️♂️ would sympathise. What gets me about Golf is about once a round I'll hit a shot and think 'a professional couldn't have got a better outcome than that' The separating issue between the pros and club golfers is the level of 'consistency'. Over time the high level golfer develops consistency and then layers on top of that a powerful self belief and mindset. These are similar skills that you need to develop to be lean Maybe once a week you'll eat a meal and think... 'a nutritionist couldn't have eaten a better meal than that' and then the very next meal you shank your drive off the tea with a full tub of ice cream. To be lean you need to work on the mental side of the equation too. Believe that you are capable of being lean and having firm abs. Believe that you can live without blood pressure and diabetes medications. Believe that a couple of misguided meals is not going to define you as a person. Are you going to make a comeback or continue missing short puts for the rest of your life until your body gives up on you? Rory will be hurting, he will be grieving. I believe he will be back and he will win another major. What are you going to do?

"Inner Game Tips: Keep Your Mind & Game Sharp" All golfers go through a "crisis of confidence" when it comes to their play. The longer you play the more chances this will happen. Rory McIllroy, Tiger Woods, Jim Furik, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus, no golfer is immune to poor play. As a golf psychologist my first question is "Discuss your Inner Dialogue" what stories are you telling yourself? It has a dramatic influence on your mental and play performance. Golfers can sabotage their own games by an avalanche of negative self talk. Hitting mis-hit shots happen and if they raise your anger level you are spiraling downward. Your ancient brain amygadala will emit neurotransmitters cortisol and adrenaline. Your game is under threat unless immediate change occurs in your mind. Heart rate, blood pressure, pulse increase, muscles lock, breathing quickens, and golf goes down the drain. Negative mind set can produce exactly the mis-hit trying to be avoided. Dave Stockton the PGA Pro, putting guru, called a flood of negative self talk and thoughts as backward thinking. To avoid at all costs. Every golf shot should be "approached from positivity" and the results will change. Positive self talk raises confidence levels and better ball striking. Like Jack Nicklaus never became over-ridden with negative emotions. Jack acted like every outcome was the shot he thought could happen. Steel self determination was his game. Can you control your mental challenges, are you a fighter and a wolf seeking prey? Make your best shot stand for itself and if a mis-hit occurs move on, forget it before your next hit. Accept the negative mis-hit and wipe them from your mind & move on immediately. Be excited, look forward to your next shot. Let the hurricane spin around you but your mind is the "calm eye of the storm" and negative thoughts can be sent back into the wind and ignored by you. Play golf because you love it and go to awesome venues and meet great people. It all begins and ends in the 6 inches between your ears. Positivity will do your play wonders. Let's talk a little bit about the issues golfers face during a round of play. For instance when a golfers is on the first tee and suddenly is terrified of what to do (this can happen to golfers of any level). Keep in mind crowds , pressure to perform, and desire to play great can all raise the level of personal fear, stress, or anxiety. Such is a moment of dread. So to tell such a golfer to "just relax" is often like telling someone who is drowning to swim! Even experienced sky divers can freeze up right before they jump out of a plane. To say "Just Jump" will not help, nor provide calm to any degree. There are millions of golfers who want to have fun and show they are a good partner. However, on occasion they, in effect can't perform, so what they do if able to swing a club is almost always mis-hot, top the ball, hit a grounder off the tee or miss. Make mistakes. In short they get in their own way. Helping them learn about these issues is the job of the golf coach and seeing this often is a start for a nervous golfer to begin to learn how to heal their issues. For instance if someone explains to you, every golfer, everyday makes poor hits. They hit into water, out of bounds under trees and into the gallery of spectators. I often hear such golfers make the statement "I just want to run and hide." If you play golf you will have errors in judgement, select the wrong club, top the ball, or hit the ground instead. So often I discuss what is "OVER TRYING" the idea that self-expectations can produce unrealistic results. I spoke with a golfer who had a metal bar welded across the back of the roof supports on his golf cart. I asked him,... "what is this bar for on your cart, since I had never seen one prior." He said, ..." oh when I make a terrible hit I attach my "punching bag" to the bar and beat the hell out of it. Instead of throwing my putter in the pond or wrapping my driver around the tree. " Wow such a creative solution I thought. Yet getting mad like does not help it hurts your game. Essentially those behaviors cause your brain to kick into over-drive. Responses of negativity in anxiety, anger, fear, rejection means the consequences can hurt your game. Blood Pressure Rises, Pulse Rate Jumps Up, all your muscles contract and your beathing almost stops. Perfect examples of what NOT TO DO ON THE GOLF COURSE. Good coaches explain this in their initial golf teachings. I told the golf cart driver to go grab a drink or brew, have a friend drive the cart and stop keeping score. Make golf fun, not a means of getting angry that hurts your game. Realize others do not enjoy open displays of uncontrolled anger, nasty comments, poor sportsmanship. Golf is meant to be fun, enjoy the outdoors, play with friends. So instead of others avoiding you, get them involved make golf fun again. Tell stories at the clubhouse food court, smile at your spouse and have your kids learn that dad likes this game of golf. Dr. Dunkley

This is what winning looks like. 1️⃣ I quit for good reason For a year, due to a combination of a series of injuries and a need to redirect my leisure time, I stopped working out. This was a big deal for me because for 10 years I had committed myself to the sport of triathlon and had trained consistently. But my body was sending me a series of signals that it was time to switch gears. 2️⃣ I recommitted to start again On my birthday, I made a vow to myself to get back to working out with no end goal in mind. Fitness for the sake of fitness. For the next three days I put on my running clothes, dusted off the treadmill, and went to bed without doing a workout. I didn’t succeed but my getting dressed I increased my odds. 3️⃣ I started small and let go of the data Today I finally did it, but not without a fight. I couldn’t find my heart rate monitor. When I did, it was out of battery. I looked for my watch, and it too was dead. This normally would have delayed my start, but instead I let go of the data and when by feel. Just 20 minutes of running and I was done. Victory! Winning isn’t about crushing your opponent. It’s not about crushing yourself. It’s about getting to your own finish line in your own time. Every win sets up the conditions for the next. P.S: Tonight I’ll charge my watch and find a battery for my HRM. 🤨

GOLF PRO GETS CONFIDENCE AND ENERGY BACK "I’m a golf pro and during lockdown, I was putting weight on, felt bloated, lethargic and energy was low. I realised I needed to do something to prevent losing control of my health, fitness and self-esteem. Following a discovery call which involved understanding my challenges and goals and how she could help me, I enrolled with Sheila's 3 month programme. Sheila guided me through the assessment and the structured stages were monitored via specific applications on my phone and tablet. Weekly coaching calls kept me accountable and on track. Working with Sheila changed the way I look at my food and lifestyle choices, how important small amounts of movement and strength training are and recognising what choices I make will sabotage my success in health, mindset, fitness, work and personal life. These lifechanging habits are easy and sustainable. I am delighted to report that I reduced my weight by 14 lbs, feel and look so much better in my clothing, mental clarity has improved, and confidence has returned. I now feel that I also have the energy to work those longer hours." Do you need your mojo back, golfing, boardroom or otherwise? Message me for a complimentary and confidential call to discuss how I can matchmake you with the future version of yourself and helping you get there 💪 #golf #mindset #energy #focus #win #matchmaker

It pains me to admit it, but my step mom beat me in golf. We played 9 holes. I shot a 53. She shot a 52. And although every loss hurts, this stung FAR worse than the rest because it came at the hands of my freaking step mom (I've never lost to her in a sport, ever). Also because I was in the lead, and screwed it up by focusing on THAT instead of what I should have been focused on: *Playing MY game - and each individual shot - to the best of my ability.* -- I made this mistake in golf, but many people make it when chasing fitness goals. Just in slightly different ways. They'll... 1.) Focus on other peoples' results instead of focusing on their own. The comparison makes them feel bad about what they've accomplished, or like they've accomplished nothing at all (which leads to poor decision making, and torches their morale). 2.) Focus on the size of their goal, and how far they are away from it, instead of focusing on doing the best they can with each individual workout. Or each meal, each endurance session, each quality night of sleep, etc. This makes the goal seem overwhelming, and like it's sitting on a finish line they're never going to reach. In either case (or both), their warped focus makes it a zero sum game. They're going to lose. Just like I did. The better approach? Focus on the PROCESS - on playing the "game" to the best of your ability - and let the outcome (victory) take care of itself. That's my plan going in to the next round of golf. I won't make the same mistake twice! ---- Questions? Leave a comment, or shoot me a message. Happy to help! 💪 🔥

“Instant success takes time” This is one of my Dad’s sayings and he is spot on. Nearly three years ago I started lifting weights in a small pt gym - I needed someone to show me what to do and how to lift. I found my baseline and we were going to build from there. In the case of my back squat: 75kg for 3 reps. Not bad - my coach thought I had more in me. 💪🏻 Over the past few years we have made lots and lots of small changes (nutrition, form, a belt) and each tweak has seen a incremental improvement. The most important factor has been consistency. Maintaining twice-weekly visits to the gym, keeping myself focused on continuous improvement, periodic re-testing of that baseline. 📈 Even when I suffered setbacks (tore my hamstring, broke my finger - cheers rugby) I kept going to the gym. There was always something I could do - stay consistent. Ride the storm and come out the other side, adapting where needed until things settled. This morning I broke through a massive personal goal - 100kg, 3 reps. It might not mean a lot to anyone else, but it the personal satisfaction is huge. 🎉 Transformational change takes time. It takes lots of little changes, consistently implemented, to have a compound transformational effect. #Transformation #Change #Consistency #FeelGoodFriday #SmashingGoals
