Pure nutty - the wild Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO! In 1989, after a long successful run in the Group B Rally Era and dominating the SCCA Escort Trans-Am Racing Series the previous year, Audi chose to take on a new challenge. They enter the 90 Quattro GTO in the IMSA (International Motor Sports Association) race. The car they sent was special to say the least. It packed a turbocharged 2.2L Inline 5-cylinder making 720 hp. It featured Audi's renowned all-wheel drive system and weighed 2646 pounds (1200kg). The result was a vicious performance that left its mark. Not to mention it might be one of the coolest sounding cars ever made. Audi took second place this season, missing out on the championship by two points. A slow start to the season cost them dearly, but the second half of this season showed how Audi could dial in the car. Winner 5 of their last 7 races. Just not enough to finish the job. A bittersweet ending. However, in 1990 Audi decided to leave IMSA and focus its attention on DTM. Having said that, the SF-24 behaved very well there and this is another proof of the fact that, if the rear suspension problem (related to the return spring) is fixed, the car proves to have good potential. 🇦🇹 Red Bull Racing & Red Bull Technology: Since the beginning of the weekend, though, the current World Champion had been complaining about the aerodynamic balance of his car. As observed at the start of the season, this car is an extreme car, oriented to aerodynamic efficiency. It was a weekend full of surprises and twists that kept motorsport fans around the world glued to their screens. 🏎️ Now we just have to look ahead, with the next Japanese Grand Prix scheduled for 7th April. Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd introduces a trio of racing phenoms ahead of the F1 season: The Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team had arguably its best season ever just a year ago. With nine podium finishes and 280 Championship points, the British luxury carmaker reminded the public of its high-performance motorsport technology. This upcoming season, it hopes to recreate the same success. When Mercedes-Benz announced its intention to participate in the newly minted FIA GT Championship in 1996, its rivals had every right to be concerned. Throughout its history, the Stuttgart outfit seemed to possess a singular purpose when it came to racing, combining resource with an engineering brilliance few manufacturers could rival. Never one to do things by halves, the company set out to dominate rather than participate—an ethos that harked back to the all-conquering 300 SLR, whose winning run was only curtailed when tragedy struck at Le Mans in 1955. That fateful race saw the German marque withdraw from top-flight sports car competition, but by the 1980s and 1990s, its gradual return was met with astounding success in Touring Cars and beyond. So much so that the firm’s dominance of DTM would lead to rivals Opel and Alfa Romeo walking away from the sport, and the eventual collapse of the series. With DTM dead and the 190 Evolution’s supremacy absolute, Mercedes-Benz turned its attention to the new and more competitive FIA GT Championship for 1997, trading Opel and Alfa Romeo for more fitting rivals Porsche and McLaren. Mercedes-Benz would quickly bring its CLK GTR GT1 to life and prove it was no match for the international competition.
