Here's how it works: 📍 Avoiding harmful industries: Investments are screened to exclude businesses involved in activities prohibited by Sharia, such as alcohol, gambling, and pork production. 📍 Promoting ethical practices: Companies must adhere to ethical business practices. This includes fair treatment of employees, responsible environmental practices, and honest dealings. 📍 Prohibiting riba (interest): Islamic finance prohibits earning interest. Instead, profit-and-loss sharing models, such as Mudarabah (profit-sharing) and Musharakah (joint venture), are used. 📍 Encouraging social welfare: A portion of profits is often directed towards social welfare initiatives, such as community development projects, charitable activities, and poverty alleviation. 📍 Transparency and accountability: Islamic financial institutions prioritize transparency and accountability, fostering trust and ensuring that investments are ethically managed. A centuries-old tradition known as 'adashe' continues to thrive here in northern Nigeria (I am sure when you read this to the end, you'll realize that it also thrives in your community, bearing another name). It's a communal practice where individuals pool their resources, contributing a fixed amount monthly, to receive a lump sum at the end of a predetermined cycle. On the surface, it looks like a prudent financial strategy and a means of accumulating wealth over time. However...look closer, and you'll see a different reality: participants merely circulate their own funds under the guise of collective savings! Take, for instance, the case of two women, Maman Hauwakulu and Kande, my neighbours. Both women are eager to secure their financial futures, so they decide to join an adashe group comprising five members, each contributing 10,000 naira monthly. The arrangement dictates that the accumulated sum is handed over to one member every five months, rotating until everyone has had their turn. Maman Hauwakulu and Kande are filled with hope that at the end of the cycle, they'll be very wealthy. It always seems like that. But... Let's do a little maths. Total contributions per month: 5 members 10,000 naira = 50,000 naira In essence, each member receives back the same amount they contributed! After 5 months: - Total contributions: 5 months 50,000 naira/month = 250,000 naira - Each member receives: 250,000 naira / 5 members = 50,000 naira :) In simple terms, adashe is a merry-go-round of the participants' own money. They're merely receiving back what they've already given, with no real gains to speak of! Despite its widespread popularity and cultural significance, adashe is a deceptive financial practice that offers the illusion of prosperity without tangible benefits. If you can't afford to let go of a certain amount per month over time, here's one advice for you: don't join the adashe bandwagon. Alhamdulillah, our study received the Best Paper award at the Islamic Social Finance Conference. The research focused on assessing the impact of a specific Islamic religious council in Malaysia, particularly its contributions to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: Zero Hunger. We identified three key social impacts of the council's programs: (1) improving access to healthy food, (2) fostering altruism within the community, and (3) enhancing both physical and mental well-being. Our findings suggest that Islamic social finance should evolve from focusing solely on output to embracing outcome-based assessments. Such an approach would ensure Shariah compliance and emphasize the broader social benefit (maslahah) to the society. We believe this shift towards an outcome-based framework can better highlight Islamic social finance's lasting and meaningful impact on society.
