Yesterday, Partners on our Government Relations team Whitaker Askew and Stacey Alexander participated in a panel with Robert Fisher of Verizon at the #PRovokeNA Summit. A fair analysis. When considering character or age - whether in their late 70s or early 80s, do a few years' difference truly matter? The key lies in evaluating the track record of well-selected and consistent teams that surround them. Rationality, empathy, and moral values, which embody traditionally conservative values, are the crucial factors to consider. You can have the smartest, most committed and experienced people in your team. The opportunity can be the most exciting in a generation. But it will go wrong if you haven’t created a team based on a shared purpose, defined roles and an environment where everyone has each other’s backs. Of course, No 10 is not like most workplaces. Politics is a monster of an industry – intense scrutiny, a relentless pace, an impossible number of competing priorities. But as has become clear over the past few weeks, the team dynamics at play are not unique. Keir Starmer now has a critical opportunity to forge an effective team. In a bold move, the Prime Minister has shuffled his key advisors, bringing together a new, updated set of smart, committed, experienced people. So here’s a quick plea – whether you are the Prime Minister or the leader of any new team born out of a challenging situation – before you start the thousand mile an hour sprint that will be the next five years, sit down and have the difficult conversations together. - Be honest about what has just happened and what can be learned. - Put it all out on the table and agree a shared way forward. - Think about what’s going to get in the way and talk about how you’ll deal with it. - Be explicit that the needs of the whole are more important than personal victories. - Hold each other to account respectfully.     Too much to ask? Maybe. But even the most talented people can't build a team without talking.

Since the +More Perfect Union "Coffee + Courage" Challenge started, we've had amazing people from all over the country participate in the challenge including actors, CEOs, Generals and military veterans, college students, news commentators, and community leaders. For my challenge, I recently sat down with two Georgetown graduates, a behavioral scientist and a democracy and political science expert, Max Henning and Abigail Carlson, to discuss the challenges our democracy currently faces and how we can work together at the community level to improve our country for all Americans. What was so amazing about the conversation was that we spent an hour talking about the state of our nation, and not once did we say negative things about specific politicians or disparage a political party. We simply focused on finding solutions to challenges we could address. We left our conversation with smiles, hugs, great lattes, and a commitment to working together to make the world a better place. My time together with Max and Abby made me wonder, what if leaders focused more on finding solutions versus finding ways to blame each other for problems that impact us all? The challenge is STILL going, so that means there is still time to sit down with a work colleague, family member, friend, or stranger and have a meaningful conversation over coffee. I guarantee that despite what you may see in the media about how different we all are, a conversation over a cup of coffee will reveal how much we have in common.
