Excited to share a new initiative between BDC and Equifax using our respective data for the index's components (1) business confidence and (2) credit performance, along with publicly available from the Bank of Canada and Statistics Canada | Statistique Canada for (3) business conditions and (4) business growth projections. Altogether we get a comprehensive picture of how small businesses are doing in the economy. Our latest analysis shows that - with 2022-Q1 as base year - after a sharp decline in small business health in 2022 and 2023, we're seeing small businesses recover in large part to major improvements in business conditions as of 2024-Q3. 📖 Roy Morgan Business Confidence increased rapidly in February, up 8.3pts to 101.5 – the first positive result above 100 for over a year ⚡️ TWE Highlights: 1. Business Confidence in February 2024 increased to 101.5, the highest in over a year, driven by confidence in investing in business growth and positive outlook for the Australian economy. 2. South Australia and Victoria saw the largest increases in Business Confidence, with both states above the national average, while Western Australia maintained above average confidence despite a decrease. 3. Accommodation & Food Services industry was the most confident, followed by Education & Training, while Transport, Postal & Warehousing was the least confident industry. 4. Businesses were more positive about their financial outlook compared to a year ago, with a majority expecting better financial performance in the next year and next five years. 5. The decrease in inflation and the RBA holding interest rates led to increased business confidence, with potential for further rate cuts and improved consumer spending in the coming months.

The economic impact of small businesses in the United States is significant, contributing to nearly 44% of the U.S. economic activity, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Despite their size, small businesses play a major role in driving innovation, job creation, and economic growth across the country. Small businesses create two-thirds of net new jobs in the U.S. economy, demonstrating their vital role in maintaining employment levels. They also contribute significantly to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), especially in key sectors like healthcare, retail, construction, and professional services. The entrepreneurial spirit inherent in small businesses also drives innovation, with many of today’s larger corporations having started as small enterprises. While small businesses contribute substantially to economic activity, they face unique challenges, such as limited access to capital and resources, compared to larger corporations. However, by focusing on niche markets and local communities, they continue to provide vital services and products that help sustain the overall economy. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce published a new report that shows short term business sentiment in the Canadian business community is down but, increasingly, there is a longer-term optimism for an improved business horizon. The positive outlook is attributed to falling interest rates, success in bringing down inflation, and employment growing modestly. There are concerns about fragile supply chains and the higher housing prices and debt levels in cities like Toronto and Vancouver. 'Data For Business' is an effort of the Langley Chamber, in partnership with the Canadian Chamber, to bring our members reports, stats and analysis on economic and business data to help inform business and investment decisions. Read our latest update below: The Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s Business Data Lab (BDL) has released its latest report highlighting the new reality for small businesses in Canada’s post-pandemic retail landscape, which has been beset by shifting consumer behaviours. The report, entitled, A Portrait of Small Business in Canada: Adaption, Agility, All At Once, explores the integral role small businesses play in Canada’s economy and sheds light on how these businesses can thrive despite major economic forces working against them — including the rising cost of doing business, the highest borrowing costs in over two decades and increased pandemic debt loads.  While 98 per cent of Canadian businesses qualify as small businesses, the report goes further in illustrating that micro firms are by far the most common businesses type in Canada, with the median firm having fewer than five employees. This underscores the importance of improving our understanding of the business realities of all small firms, but especially micro firms, while ensuring that adequate financial, operational and regulatory support measures boost the resilience of small and micro businesses for the sake of Canada’s economy. Put simply, the survival of micro firms is a macroeconomic issue for Canada, and policymakers should be attuned to the needs of these small businesses.
