Today's State of the Climate report should serve as another reminder that this is bloody serious, very urgent, and that renewable energy is a critical solution to about 75% of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions. It is also a reminder that each extra year that coal power stations stay open, it is either (a) a much more sudden full-economy decarbonisation that is needed (still not far away), (b) way worse climate impacts that will have devastating consequences for humans, communities, livelihoods, our economy and the environment.

There is a shift in public opinion towards climate change and the advancements in renewable energy technologies such as wind and solar power, which have become more accessible and affordable. Policy action has been slow, but there has been a decline in coal burning and pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A new report on the state of the global climate reveals a deeply concerning acceleration of the climate crisis. Key climate indicators, from greenhouse gas levels to ice loss, have reached record levels this year in what researchers call a “critical and unpredictable new phase of the climate crisis” The report highlights the continued heavy reliance on fossil fuels as a major driver of the climate crisis. Even though renewable energy use is increasing, the consumption of coal and oil reached record highs in 2024. This demonstrates the world's ongoing dependence on fossil fuels despite the urgent need to transition away from them.
