Here’s an interesting read/concept to consider from TechCrunch! AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT are incredible innovations that are worth being excited about — but it’s important to also remember that we haven’t perfected these platforms yet. When it comes to chatbot technology and inclusivity, there are still multiple obvious shortcomings. #ChatGPT and other AI tools of the same vein currently struggle to read cultural nuance, and the algorithms that power these services mostly approach things from a Eurocentric/Western lens. Basically, one of the most popular and widespread AI platforms we have today was not built with the perspectives of #POC #BIPOC in mind. As a result, we’re starting to see alternative chatbots/modifications of ChatGPT in an attempt to create #PersonalizedAI such as John Pasmore’s Latimer.AI, an AI language model that tailors its answers to the experiences of Black and brown people. See also Erin Reddick’s beta ChatBlackGPT, which adjusts the harsher language and rhetoric regarding Black historical events, was trained by Black authors, writings, and philosophers. So, do you think #culturallyspecific AI models are a good solution? Or eventually, should broader companies that own ChatGPT/chatbots have a responibility to make them as inclusive as possible? Could that even be achieved with the structural racism and persistent inequalities that prevail in the tech ecosystem today? I want your takes.

We'd like to convene Black AI firms to review the current structure of the industry and the specific risks to Black people....
"The current ChatGPT offers answers that are too generalized for specific questions that cater to certain communities, as its training appears Eurocentric and Western in its bias. This is not unique — most AI models are not built with people of color in mind. But many Black founders are adamant not to be left behind. Numerous Black-owned chatbots and ChatGPT versions have popped up in the past year to cater specifically to Black and brown communities, as Black founders, like John Pasmore, seek to capitalize on OpenAI’s cultural slip. “If you ask the model generally who are some of the most important artists in our culture, it will give you Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo,” John Pasmore said of ChatGPT. “It’s not going to say anything about India or China, Africa, or even African Americans, because it has a bias that is focused on the European trajectory of history.” So Pasmore launched LatimerAI, a language model to give answers tailored to reflect the experiences of Black and brown people. Erin Reddick started ChatBlackGPT™, a chatbot also centered on Black and brown communities. Globally there is the Canada-based Spark Plug, which is an alternative to ChatGPT for Black and brown students." Dominic-Madori Davis continues to ensure that these issues are highlighted. Good morning and as readers of mine know, I have embraced ChatGPT and use it primarily to help me visualize data into in hopefully most cases mind bending graphics and pictures that I could not in a million years imagine or do by myself. I encourage you to get on these power tools and try/experiment with them and be very careful to use them responsibly, ethically and wisely. If you are not aware of this, I think it would be a great idea to learn that ChatGPT is at this juncture the only real "constant" in a very rapidly evolving and changing (daily) AI Landscape today. Ever since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, AI tools have been all the rage. While there have been AI-powered tools before OpenAI released ChatGPT to the public, none of them gained as much public attention and hype. Word of ChatGPT’s capabilities spread like wildfire online and within days, more than a million people had registered to use it. ChatGPT was the first generative AI tool to reach mass adoption, giving millions of people around the world a taste of what large language models are capable of. Ever since then, other tools have popped up left and right, as more and more companies brought their own AI-powered tools to market. Whether it's image generation and enhancing tools such as Adobe Firefly or AI-powered productivity suites such as Microsoft's Copilot - there are many ways in which companies try to leverage the capabilities of AI, but so far none has come as close to mainstream adoption as ChatGPT has. According to surveys conducted by Statista Consumer Insights in 2022, 2023 and 2024, ChatGPT has always been ahead of the pack. While the landscape around it is constantly changing as more and more companies bring their tools to life, ChatGPT has retained its first-mover advantage, although Meta AI has caught up with the market leader in the 2024 survey. With Apple having entered the market in late 2024, it will be interesting to see how the adoption curve of Apple AI will look like. With its huge installed base of devices and its loyal customer base, Apple has the potential to shake things up. Selected text and graphic are © Visual Capitalist, 2024. Have You Moved Beyond ChatGPT? When we engage with enterprises about their AI journey, a common question is whether they’ve explored AI technologies. The usual response is a resounding "yes," but upon digging deeper, it often turns out they’re primarily referencing ChatGPT. For many employees, AI and ChatGPT are synonymous. It’s been two years since ChatGPT emerged, and while the landscape of Generative AI has evolved significantly, few outside the tech sector seem to have ventured beyond this initial tool. This could be due to several factors: limited mindshare among employees, a prevalence of paid tools, and a general lack of awareness. To clarify, ChatGPT is just one application based on a single model from OpenAI—a large language model. The potential for AI extends far beyond this, with numerous directions to explore. Yet, many employees lack the resources or support to do so, and tech jargon can often complicate the conversation, making it seem daunting. So, what can we do? *Simplify: Break down the AI landscape into digestible concepts that everyone can grasp. *Enable: Create an environment where employees feel free to experiment and innovate with AI tools. *Apply: Integrate AI applications within the organization to move beyond theoretical discussions and foster practical uses. I’m personally committed to helping anyone who feels overwhelmed by the Generative AI landscape. If you’re looking to better understand this space, I’d love to offer guidance and share insights. Let’s navigate this together!

Since the launch of ChatGPT, Generative AI (GenAI) has woven itself into the daily routines of half a billion people worldwide, demonstrating its potential to supercharge productivity and reshape our societies in an unprecedented way. Would GenAI exacerbate global inequality? In my latest blog, my colleagues and I delved into this question. Here’s what we found: * As of March 2024, the top 40 GenAI tools received nearly 3 billion monthly visits. ChatGPT reached users in 209 countries, * GenAI’s early adopters are primarily younger, highly educated males, with usage peaking during the work week. * Middle-income countries surpassed high-income countries within 6 months and now account for half of ChatGPT global traffic, but low-income countries account for less than 1% of GenAI traffic, highlighting a stark digital divide. As GenAI continues to evolve, understanding its user demographics and usage patterns will be crucial for industry stakeholders and policymakers to harness its full potential and ensure its benefits are accessible to all.

Since the dawn of civilization, generations have envisioned creating intelligence that works for humanity. In our time, this dream may finally come true. Generative AI marks the beginning of this revolution. While I’m not yet equipped to contribute technically, I would like to contribute to our understanding of how AI is shaping the world. Our first in a series of AI research kicks off by documenting the rapid sweep of GenAI globally. What really surprised me while digging into the data were: 1. ChatGPT has reached and stabilized at 500 million monthly unique users—more than the population of the U.S. or EU. 2. ChatGPT has spread to nearly every country in the world. 3. In just 6 months, traffic from middle-income countries surpassed that from high-income countries. (Can anyone inform me how long it took for electricity to reach more people in developing countries compared to developed countries?) Many other insights are well summarized in the latest World Bank Blog below, and welcome to check the working paper for more details https://lnkd.in/gHYvj3aD.

Very interesting and timely study that to me demonstrates three key things: 1. How popular #GenAI tools are in middle income countries, making a strong case for #AI as a tool for development 2. How far we have to go to close the #digitaldivide between middle and low income countries 3. How fast we must act to prevent the emergence of a deeper and wider #AIdivide To me, the bottom line is that we have a once-in-generation opportunity to get low income countries and vulnerable populations access to #connectivity #devices and #digitalskills to enable use of GenAI tools, as well as #compute and #data to ensure that those tools can be adapted to the values and needs of people in these countries.
