As the Graduate Coach I often encounter graduates from various sectors, such as telecommunications and electrical engineering, IT, BA who struggle to secure employment despite applying to prestigious graduate programs like those at Telstra, Optus, NBN, GHD, Aecom, Aurecon, WSP, and AGL. These companies generally attract a high volume of applicants compared to the limited positions available, making the selection process highly competitive. Additionally, many of these programs prefer candidates with permanent residency, a detail often overlooked until late stages like interviews, leading to disappointment for many international students. Aiming for large corporations right after graduation might not be practical due to the intense competition and specific requirements such as residency status. Short courses to enhance employability The Graduate Coach acknowledges that while there are many short courses available that could enhance employability, the method of job searching—whether through online applications or networking—significantly influences which courses might be most beneficial. Be practical I like to emphasise a pragmatic approach by focusing on roles that provide fundamental skills and considering career progression over a span of 3 to 7 years, rather than fixating on landing a position at a 'perfect' company immediately. Look for mentorship internally Moreover, securing a role that offers basic training and finding a mentor within the company can greatly alleviate the pressures of navigating the early stages of one’s career If you want to secure full-time work, just remember: A + B + C.
