🎯 Silicon Valley is all in on AI agents at the cost of AI augmentation

This recent a16z thought piece on "intelligent automation" hints at an interesting disconnect in the AI space. While Silicon Valley races toward agentic AI and automated enterprises, there's a massive opportunity being overlooked: intelligence augmentation over automation.
Post-Covid most organisations are sitting on a goldmine of unstructured data - every Zoom call, Teams meeting and support interaction is now captured, transcribed and searchable. This isn't just meeting minutes, it's real-time business intelligence waiting to be tapped.
The key is finding "safe-to-fail" use cases rather than "fail-safe". Instead of trying to automate these workflows, we can layer intelligence over them:
📊 Spot emerging customer needs before they become feature requests
🎯 Track competitor mentions across hundreds of sales calls
📈 Measure the effectiveness of your latest product messaging
🎓 Identify training gaps from support call patterns
A 95% accurate trend analysis across your sales calls is incredibly valuable, even with that 5% error rate. When you're augmenting rather than automating, perfect accuracy isn't required.
Intelligence on demand is already here, we're just collectively distracted by dreams of superintelligence. The real opportunity is in using AI to surface insights from across your organisation, augmenting human work rather than replacing it.
What do you think, are we overthinking AI adoption?
