🚨 There are no shortage of people going above and beyond.🚨 New people are coming into the industry all the time, and you have to fight to be one of them. It's not about burning yourself out, but it is about being extremely consistent, to the point where you may not have much of a life outside of creating and taking care of yourself (and others you love). Don't create aimlessly, create with purpose. Take time to understand the pipelines and processes that companies use and skills they are looking for. Find common themes in job posts on skills. What problems do they need solved typically that you like doing? How can you put your spin on it? Research is the name of the game, don't just start running in a random direction! 📣 Don't listen to companies. They don't know what they want. Wait what?📣 Yes, we know we said to research, but at the end of the day companies only know what they want when they see it. You have to show them it, not tell them it. If you show them something that feels like it could be plopped right into their production, you are getting hired. If you are showing less than that, you won't be hired. It's really that simple. Take a good honest look at your work and ask yourself "is this good enough?" If it's not, then don't bother applying anywhere until you can empathically say "YES!" to that question. There is no learning the job after you get hired anymore, those days are gone. That's reality. It might feel impossible, but it's not. Just keep improving any little bit by bit that you can. Keep moving forward small steps at a time. Don't spend all your time just applying to jobs, you must keep improving at all costs, even if it means applying much less than you are right now. People get out of practice and then it just falls apart from there. Hope this wasn’t too direct. Good luck out there!🍀 And please do check out our ebooks for more advice. You can do this! #gameindustry #gamedev #gamejobs

Back with post 3 of my #GetAJob campaign! ✨ If you've been following my journey, you'll know I've been engaging in numerous coffee chats—and I highly recommend them! A huge thanks to everyone who has taken the time to meet with me. I've gathered amazing advice and tips, which I'm excited to share in this series. A recurring piece of advice I've received is the importance of leveraging your past experiences to differentiate yourself and demonstrate your qualifications to interviewers. For instance, while my background is more technical in design, I'm aiming to transition into the creative side. Although I may lack direct creative agency experience, my professional experience in technical industries such as aerospace and healthcare enables me to understand complex concepts with ease. In my case, I argue that technical experience demands as much creativity, if not more, than traditional creative roles, having more restrictions and regulations to adhere to. There is a belief that creativity is inherently intuitive and unique to each individual 🧠 The main point is that even if you lack a specific skill (z), you likely have related skills (x and y) that can bridge the gap. I recommend sitting down and thinking about what experience and skills you have and how they can transfer to the roles you want! Of course, this isn't foolproof—you can't leap from engineering to nursing. However, for those looking to enter creative industries, communications or marketing, this advice can be incredibly useful. There's often debate about whether pigeonholing is real, but based on my coffee chats, many people successfully make the switch when they put their minds to it. To my fellow recent grads: keep up the good work. And to the rest of you: thanks for reading this far! Enjoy this little visual made with Adobe FireFly's AI capabilities, I highly encourage experimenting with it to inspire creativity and create unique visuals. Logging on your computer to work, thinking you're day is going to go as planned and then BAM, no, it's not. The meeting you scheduled isn't going to start or end with you. The 1:1 you had scheduled isn't going to be held with you. The follow-up you had to deliver isn't going to be followed up by you, someone else will deliver the message. You're kinda blind sided, but you knew it was coming, but you just didn't know when. You've been laid off. You're gut punched. You're relieved. You're scared. You're excited. You're anxious. You're hopeful. You now have to start a new journey to "find your people." You now have to subject yourself to people who want to rewrite your resume because it doesn't have this or that... it's too long, it's too short... You now have to tailor your resume with every submission in hopes that the AI will pass you on to an actual human, even though you were told by someone you don't have to do that but someone else says you do. You now have to pre-screen with someone who doesn't even understand the jd, role, or what the function is within their own company. You now have to wait for a decision from the team of people you've met with. You now have to interview again as another candidate was chosen. You now have to start the cycle all over again. You lean on your people. You reconnect with former coworkers. You discover what's truly important to you. You find yourself. You invest in yourself. You take up a new hobby or you pick up the old one that you let go of because work got in way. You keep pushing, praying, and going strong... it's OK to cry. You are not alone!! #LayoffsHurt #JobSeeking #CustomerSuccess #ProjectManagement #Consulting

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝘁 𝗔𝗻𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲? Without a contact on the inside or a genuine connection with the potential employer, is applying even worth the time and effort? In what’s often portrayed as a “blue ocean” of job openings and work opportunities, the reality feels more like navigating a video game than a fair job search. The process increasingly resembles a maze, with applicant-tracking systems (ATS) and “resume filters of the quarter” acting as HUMANOID gatekeepers. 𝑶𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒎 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝑵𝒆𝒘 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉... Rather than continually "throwing my name in the hat," I'm realizing that running targeted ads to projects and using funnels to capture attention offers a higher ROI for landing potential contracts and job opportunities. As I continue to study, build, and learn each day, these reflections fuel my commitment to exploring innovative ways to get noticed.

I felt this was a good time to say ‘what’s up’ and ‘thank you!!!’ to those who have connected or follow me here as I am grateful to be closing in on the 6500 follower mark. 😎 I know some might think my follower count isn't a big deal… but, you know, I’m simply delighted to be growing my network, slow and steady, here on LinkedIn and looking forward to getting to know you better. 🤙🏽 𝗔 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼: My name is Mary Despe, a former Recruiter-turned-Career Coach, based on Oahu’s North Shore. I’ve actually had a few experiences along the way that I found impactful on who I am today - including: - Completing undergrad and grad school only to reach graduation day without a job both times. - Experiencing a career pivot, layoff, job promotions and being passed over for them. - Dealing with the dreaded horrible boss and toxic teammates. - Speaking up and leading as an introvert in extrovert-centric environments. - Moving to new places for a job where I knew no one. - Going through the multiple stages of employment, from W2, to contractor, to freelance, to eventually building my own business as the primary source of income. I consider myself lucky to have gone through these different events, with all of these experiences have led me to 𝗺𝘆 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲: ✨➡️ 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲. 🔍 4 Months Into My Job Search—Some Tips for Anyone Just Starting 🔍 I’ve been on the job hunt for about four months now, and it’s definitely been a learning experience! If you’re just starting out, here are a few things I’ve picked up along the way that might help: 👓 Really Read Those Job Descriptions: It’s like gathering requirements for a project. Take the time to understand what they’re looking for and tweak your resume and cover letter to match. Quality over quantity is key! 👥 Make Networking Fun: Think of it like building relationships at work—reach out to people, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to connect with new folks. It’s not just about finding a job, but learning more about what’s out there. 📖 Learn from Every Step: After each interview or even a rejection, take a moment to reflect. What went well? What could be better? Like improving a process, these small adjustments help you grow. ↪ Stay Open to Pivoting: Sometimes your dream role might look a little different than you first imagined. Be open to exploring new opportunities or shifting gears—it could lead you to something even better! ✏ Keep Learning: The market’s always changing, so stay open to picking up new skills or brushing up on tools like Jira, Excel, or anything that adds to your toolkit. Every little bit helps. It can be a long journey, but you've got this! If you’re also job searching or just starting out, feel free to connect—we’re all in this together! #JobSearchTips #BusinessAnalyst #Networking #Learning #Pivoting

Embrace your inner unicorn - or get lost in the noise when looking for a role/ promotion. In prepping for my stand-out from the crowd careers workshop, I came across a great diagram explaining a unique selling proposition (USP). In a job-hunting sense, it answers the question "Why should we pick you over everyone else out there?" It is the intersection of what the customer wants (in this case the employer), with what you do well (or in job hunting exceptionally well), and what others don't bring. It is based on your strengths, skills, experience, and value. From working with hundreds of people, many find this process hard. Doesn't everyone do what I do? Am I special? Where do I start? These are some of the questions, I hear people asking. In prepping for my Stand Out From the Crowd Workshop, I have developed a four-step process that I will cover on Friday, so people can go from uncertainty to clarity when promoting what they can offer. Some people can "wing it", but for most, it requires planning and preparation to refine their story. One of the first steps is identifying your superpowers (your inner unicorn), and there is a list of questions that help reflect on this. If you are keen on the questions that prompt this first step - message me or pop a "Yes please" in the message below and I will send them through. And yes - it is a picture of the rhinoceros on my desk - I couldn't find a unicorn :)
