A couple decades ago you could get a job in the game industry without knowing any of the software or tools used by a company. Sounds unfair right? The kicker is, many of those that got their start decades ago are no longer in the industry. They could not keep up in ever evolving tools and quality. The good news is, pipelines and methods of creating assets, systems and games genres are starting to standardize (somewhat). This means that when you do get your start, keeping up is no longer as crazy as it used to be. While it might seem impossible, the main difference now is that the gap between a jr. and sr. creator is much smaller than it used to be. Being a senior/lead is more about speed and strategy than actual craft competency these days. That does mean it is way harder to get your career started, but once you do, you've made it into that fold and you can breathe much easier than people who started well before you. It does feel like the demands in job descriptions are impossible to meet. Just keep at your craft and keep improving at all costs. We know that is easier said than done, but it must be done. Good luck out there. #gameindustry #gamedev #gamedevelopment #career

What sets those who get into the games industry, apart from those who don’t? Here we’re not focusing on things like, “not enough jobs” or “poor economy” since these are things outside of most people’s control. Let’s focus on what you can control and what I see in those that make a successful career in the games industry! Typically, they have: - reasonably set expectations (not relying on a dream made up in their mind) - a balanced lifestyle (not everything is about working in games for them) - solid habits (1 – 2 hours a day pursuing this goal) - direction (they know the job they want to have and are learning the exact skills needed for that job) - learning mindset (confidence in their ability to break down problems and find solutions) If you’re in a game dev interview, and you don’t have any of the above going for you…. well, it doesn’t automatically disqualify you but that will show through your personality. Having the above work in your favor will positively affect your day-to-day life and goals. Fight the battle in your mind before stressing about learning a programming new design pattern. #gamesindustry #careercoaching #growth #mindset

Auto-Pilot mode will not work when job searching in a competitive field like the games industry. You must be intentional! Unless you like, idk, made a Skyrim clone over the weekend that's also multiplayer and can be played on a phone. Then yeah, probably just go get any job you want. If you can't snap your fingers resulting in a job and you'd like to learn about job search techniques, mindsets, strategies, goals, expectations, career direction, skill acquisition, reach out to me. I'd be glad to help any way I can! Also don't forgot, enterprise (game-like) development is a thing too. And it can be pretty cool. #jobsearch #jobseekers #gamedevelopment #enterprisedevelopment

As someone deeply passionate about the gaming industry, I've often wondered why so many people who love video games never take the step towards becoming creators themselves. Despite the industry's rapid growth and the increasing accessibility of development tools, many aspiring game designers and developers seem to hesitate. There are numerous reasons for this: the intimidating learning curve of programming, the overwhelming amount of information available, and the uncertainty of where to begin. Many talented individuals are held back simply because they don't know how to transform their passion into a tangible skill set. Additionally, recent layoffs in the gaming industry have added to the uncertainty and hesitation among potential creators. However, I believe this challenging time can also be seen as an opportunity—a chance to gain new skills, explore creative ideas, and potentially start an independent project. I'm on a mission to understand these challenges better and to develop a program that provides aspiring game creators with the tools, knowledge, and methodologies they need to succeed. To do this, I need to hear from you. If you're someone who loves games but feels lost when it comes to creating them or breaking into the industry, I’d love to have a conversation with you. Your insights could be invaluable in shaping a program that might just be the opportunity you've been looking for. Please DM me or leave a comment if you're interested in sharing your story. And if you know someone who might benefit from this, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could share this post with them. Thank you for helping make this dream a reality! #GameDev #GameDesign #MarketResearch #GamingIndustry #GameDevelopment #Opportunity

A degree alone doesn’t guarantee a job in games. My take on what could improve your chances. I recently spoke with 50+ Managers. From any kind of studio. I like to ask this question: "What are your hiring criteria for an entry level role?" Multiple answers, but one common ground: "The degree is usually not enough" So, what should you do? My suggestions: - Be active in communities - Join game jams/hackathons - Contribute to public projects Goal ➜ Gain practical experience. Companies love to see previous experience. ↳ It decreases the hiring risk on their side. So... Try to get some. You don't need to work in a studio to acquire it. Game jams are an amazing example. Key takeaway? Start making games while you're studying. It's worth, and it's fun 🤘 PS. Did you work on a game during your studies?

"We still have that enormous amount of graduates and juniors who began their journey in the "rapidly growing game industry" during the pandemic years. Can these people find jobs within the industry?" The barrier to work in games, starting from scratch, is typically what I would say around 6 - 12 months minimum. Again that's starting from scratch. If you can break past this barrier, you will be working in games! Which is pretty cool! - Make a plan that expects months worth of effort. Not weeks. - Focus on your schedule and how to stay consistent. - Pour just as much time into learning your on the job skills as you do learning how to job search effectively. - Keep in mind, there are many game adjustment applications that are very similar to games and develop in almost the exact same way. They are worth at least considering. Feel free to reach out to me for any thoughts, how I landed my jobs without applying for them, how I move quickly and efficiently in my career and how I've made my time in this career path very solidified. I know how to land roles, I know how to keep roles, I know how to excel at roles. And I'd be glad to help you break through whatever struggles your having! #gamedevelopment #enterprisedevelopment #jobsearching #jobseekers #tips

Video game development is one of those special careers where you can build a successful path without necessarily being hired by a big studio. With the right portfolio and social media presence, you can generate enough income to enjoy a fulfilling life, free from the stress of corporate layoffs. But here’s the catch: achieving this dream requires a solid method. But, are you ready to take that step? Over the past week, I've interviewed many people who dream of creating video games to understand their perspectives. We've discussed where they are in life, their fears about starting a career in game development, what excites them about this journey, and the results they're looking for. This has provided valuable insights, but I want to hear from more aspiring game developers like you. The tools used to create video games are incredibly versatile and can be applied in various fields such as architecture, design, cinematography, and more. Combining these technical possibilities with a solid and consistent progression of your experience on social media not only helps you build a fan base for the games you are developing but also establishes your name in the community. This visibility allows others to contact you for potential job opportunities, and believe me when I say that's the best way to find a job position. I’m conducting market research to further understand the challenges and aspirations you face. Your insights will help shape an educational program designed to empower you with the tools, knowledge, and methodology needed to work on industry projects, continue your professional evolution, and create and publish your own independent games. I would love to learn more about your fears, concerns, motivations, and goals. Would you be open to a brief interview? If you're interested, please contact me and reserve a time to chat through this: https://lnkd.in/gPYJeadb Your feedback is invaluable and will contribute to the creation of a program that truly supports your journey in game development. Thank you, and I look forward to connecting with you!
