Average wholesale food prices continued their upward trajectory in July. The Producer Price Index for All Foods – which represents the change in average prices paid to domestic producers for their output – rose 0.5% between June and July. That followed an upward-revised gain of 1.1% in June, and represented the fifth increase in the last six months. The recent move higher followed an 8-month period in which the food price index remained relatively steady. That moderation in 2023 offered some pricing relief for restaurant operators, with average wholesale food prices posting 9 consecutive months of year-over-year declines. That pricing relief is rapidly evaporating, as the price index is now trending sharply higher. Average wholesale food prices stood 4.3% above their year-ago level in July. That marked the strongest 12-month increase since March 2023. It also means average food prices remain well above pre-pandemic levels. As of July 2024, the Producer Price Index for All Foods stood 30% above its February 2020 reading. Average wholesale food prices continued to trend higher in April. The Producer Price Index for All Foods – which represents the change in average prices paid to domestic producers for their output – increased 0.4% between March and April. April’s increase followed stronger gains in February (+1.4%) and March (+0.8%), and represented the first time since late-2022 that the price index posted 3 consecutive monthly gains. Prior to the current 3-month trend higher, average wholesale food prices had remained relatively flat during the previous 8 months. As a result of the recent gains, average wholesale food prices stood 1.7% above their year-ago level in April. That marked the third consecutive increase on a 12-month basis, after posting 9 consecutive year-over-year declines. Although food prices turned higher during the last 3 months, the growth remained relatively modest compared to the recent 18-month period of double-digit gains – including a peak increase of 17.7% in April 2022. While the decades-high growth rates will likely not return in 2024, average food prices are still well above pre-pandemic levels. As of April 2024, the Producer Price Index for All Foods stood 29% above its February 2020 reading. One of the incredible things about participating in an excellent accelerator program like Startup Wise Guys is getting to know impressive projects and brilliant founders. Many people here don't know, but in 2008, I decided to open a small restaurant, turning a hobby into work. I left the advertising agency where I worked to start a new work routine in the kitchen of a restaurant with only 24 seats, called Varekay. I almost lost my taste for my hobby. Managing a restaurant can be a nightmare. One of the biggest challenges we faced was managing orders and suppliers. It took an absurd amount of time - everything was done by phone or physically - and any mistake could cause us a big problem. I preferred spending 6 hours in the kitchen than 2 hours dealing with suppliers, I confess. Then, during the acceleration program, I met Jack Clegg and the concept of Platter, his startup. I don't think I ever told him how impressed I was with the proposal he presented in his pitch deck. Jack grew up within the industry he decided to change, knew the problem, and developed the solution with incredible expertise. If there had been a Platter in 2008, maybe I would never have given up on Varekay. If you own a restaurant, I advise you to keep an eye on Platter.
