Yesterday, I had the incredible honor of meeting Capt. Sully Sullenberger, renowned for his heroic actions during the "Miracle on the Hudson" on January 15, 2009. After a catastrophic bird strike disabled both engines of US Airways Flight 1549, Captain Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles made the life-saving decision to land the aircraft in the Hudson River, saving all 155 people aboard. From his speech, I gained invaluable insights that are applicable to any role, leadership position, or organization: 1. *Address the small problems before they snowball*: If we overlook minor issues, they can compound over time, eventually leading to bigger, preventable failures. Stay proactive and vigilant. 2. *Our true legacy lies in the good we do*: Every day is an opportunity to make a positive impact. In the end, it’s the good deeds, not wealth or status, that people will remember us for. 3. *Teamwork is everything*: Survival during that crisis was not just about one person—it was about collective effort. Captain Sully credited everyone, from his first officer and cabin crew to the passengers, air traffic control, and even the ferry operators who aided in the rescue. Every link in the chain was vital. 4. *Trust your team*: While Sully focused on finding a safe place to land, he entrusted the critical task of trying to restart the engines to his co-pilot, who had recently reviewed that exact procedure. Leaders must know when to delegate and trust their team’s expertise. 5. *Clarity under pressure saves lives*: In the face of crisis, Captain Sully didn’t waste time with long explanations. His simple command, "Brace for impact," allowed the cabin crew to immediately begin safety protocols, demonstrating that clear, concise communication is critical in high-pressure situations. 6. *Training is the foundation of success*: Captain Sully emphasized that training was key to their success that day. When people are well-trained, they can act with precision, even in moments of chaos. Preparation and continuous learning are essential in any role. Thank you, Captain Sully, for sharing your wisdom and for offering lessons that transcend aviation—lessons that can guide us in any profession, and in life. And thank you to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for making this opportunity possible with the “WE are Safe” event. #Leadership #Teamwork #CrisisManagement #PersonalGrowth #LessonsFromLeaders #AviationSafety #ClearCommunication #TrustYourTeam #ContinuousLearning #CaptainSully #PNNL

Purposeful leadership is the art of considering the state of one's being and soul. It involves intentionally caring for one's inner self and regularly slowing down to check on one's inner being. As part of his navigation school training, my son joined the crew of a sailboat for a 2,800-mile journey from Southern California to the French Polynesian islands. Leadership is like a sailor navigating a sailboat through a treacherous storm. The sailboat captain constantly monitors the weather and the craft’s position, and they adjust their sails and course accordingly. Not doing so would have been disastrous for the vessel and crew. #purposefulleadership #soulcare #leadershipcoach

October is Women’s History Month in Canada, a time to celebrate the women and girls from our past, and our present, who are contributing to a better, more inclusive Canada. This year’s theme, Women at Work: Economic Growth Past, Present and Future, highlights the significant contributions women have made to the workforce throughout history, and the critical role they continue to play in driving economic innovation and progress that has benefited Canada as a whole. Let’s continue to honour women who have led by example and inspired other women and girls to realize their full potential by pursuing careers across all industries including those in non-traditional fields. Last week, our Prince Rupert Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) centre was crewed by a team of five women for the first time ever (and certainly not the last!) 👏 As our eyes and ears, these talented MCTS officers ensured mariner safety and the efficient movement of vessel traffic—no small feat, but all in a day’s work for this team!

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤!!! Over this weekend, I re-watched an all time favourite, '𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝐆𝐮𝐧: 𝐌𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤'. Capt. Pete Mitchell (Maverick) is appointed to train a group of elite #TOPGUN graduates to prepare for a high-profile mission. The first brief to the best of the best marine aviators is, "What I want to see is teamwork. Each one of you represents the best of the best. But together, you're better". Despite numerous aviation trainings, the Captain is unable to bring the aviators to work as a well-functioning and efficient team. He then engages the aviators in a game of dogfight football, which gives him, his #TEAM! Yes, it's just a movie but it does drive a noteworthy point that teamwork is an imperative in every field. A common word in corporate parlance but is an under rated one. It is often understood as an unsaid value in organisations, yet it remains sidelined in the priority list of similar corporate values. #Teamwork has to be built into organisations as a culture. A culture that should simply exist at all levels in the organisation, whether within or across departments. When it is accepted as the culture, there is no need to ensure conscious practice of it. It just becomes a commonplace practice. It flows across the organisation, building the whole company as a team. Teamwork, with itself, brings out other humanly qualities too, in each of us. Be it #loyalty, #sincerity, #empathy and many times one step ahead in building #friendships, which go a long way with you across your professional careers. Teamwork drives your passionate self and ultimately aligns yours and the organisation's goals. It may require an initial effort, especially from the management but, it is one of those core values which trickles down soon, creating the team each one wants to be a part of! #Thoughtsthatmatter #SundayAfternoonThoughts #teambuilding #DreamTeam #RSwrites

WHAT IS PRIDE TO YOU? Each year, ASC formally recognises individuals who have shown outstanding effort and embodied ASC’s values of protect, respect, integrity, discipline, and excellence (PRIDE). Hear from this year’s winner, Sharon, who showed exceptional integrity in her work in the Sovereign Shipbuilding Talent Pool program. A program focused on retaining, growing and developing Australia’s shipbuilding workforce. How does it feel to have formal recognition? “Incredibly proud and humbled!” says Sharon. What do the PRIDE values mean to you? “It’s leading by example and embedding each individual PRIDE value in how we engage, operate and deliver our work.” Can you share any career advice? “Recently I had an executive tell me to ‘get comfortable with the uncomfortable’, that just about sums up my career. Jumping in the deep end, knowing I have the safety net of my team and mentors to support me when I feel out of my depth. Ultimately, it’s been those experiences, where I’ve initially felt uncomfortable, that I have been able to learn and develop the most.” Learn more about ASC’s PRIDE values: https://lnkd.in/dYpAe46n #DefenceCareers #defence #DefenceIndustry

I just completed United’s Captain course. Designed for all first-time captains at the airline, the course includes four full days of classes on leadership, communication, resource management and much more, interspersed with meetings with company leaders and managers in other work groups. This far exceeds the FAA-mandated requirement for professional development, and arguably is the best in the industry. My personal opinion was that this was absolutely excellent thoughout each class and meeting. There was no “kool-aid,” just genuine pride in our legacy and excitement for our future. Thank you CEO Scott Kirby, VP of Flight Ops Marc Champion, VP of Flight Ops Planning and Development Kirk Limacher, MD of Flight Training Miles Morgan and MD of Flight Standards Robert Thomas. It was particularly noteworthy that every single leader emphasized #safety as our priority. Being a United Captain brings many privileges, but also significant responsibility to be safe above all else. I remember when former SVP of Flight Ops Bryan Quigley told me of his plans to develop a professional development course similar to those he and I had experienced in our military careers. Now, every pilot enjoys that training, which includes a lot of the same excellent instruction that is in the Captain course. Fun fact, did you know United was the first airline to develop and implement #CRM? Every organization should be so fortunate as to have leaders who know what’s important (safety and people), how to develop employees, and how to set the foundation for a healthy culture to thrive. I’m proud to be part of United Airlines, and no, it’s not the “kool-aid.” The simple fact is that United is poised to be the biggest and best airline in the world. How cool is that? #airline #captain #leadership #unitednext #safe #caring #dependable #efficient

CFBAA Presidents Corner December 2024 1. CFBAA Golf Outing - “Par For a Purpose” The “Par For a Purpose” golf outing is happening on February 25th at Eagle Creek, the day before the NBAA Southeast Regional Forum in Orlando. This event will help raise money for organizations supporting business aviation, like Angel Flight Southeast, Aerospace Center for Excellence, Mission Aviation Fellowship, and Vision Flight. If you're interested in participating or want to spread the word, visit CFBAA.org to sign up. It’s a great opportunity for networking and giving back to the industry. 2. Executive Director Announcement The CFBAA Board of Directors has voted to create an Executive Director position, and Matthew Olafson will be stepping into the role as the first official ED. Matthew has already been serving in an acting capacity and has done an excellent job, so it was a natural decision to have him continue. Kudos to Matthew for his dedication and hard work on behalf of CFBAA members! 3. Name Update - “Serving the Business Aviation & Aerospace Community” To stay ahead of the changing landscape of aviation, CFBAA is expanding its name to “Serving the Business Aviation & Aerospace Community.” This updated name is designed to be more inclusive of the growing commercial space and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sectors. As these industries evolve, CFBAA wants to ensure it’s welcoming to these new opportunities and the people who will shape the future of aviation. 4. Volunteering & Getting Involved Volunteering for an aviation association like CFBAA or NBAA is a great way to give back to the industry. I have had a busy week attending various meetings, including discussions on Understanding Ops Specs; leadership training for small operators; training issues with Part 142 schools; and the NBAA Small Flight Department Committee meeting. If you're not already involved, you’re encouraged to volunteer—it’s a great way to expand your network and knowledge. The experiences you gain will far outweigh the time and effort you put in. Call to Action: Make a New Year's resolution to get involved by reaching out and volunteering. If you're interested, you can email a board member to get connected to the right people. This is an exciting time for the aviation community with new opportunities on the horizon, and CFBAA is poised to play a big role in supporting members and the broader industry.
