Do you know how to use that microphone? Did you buy the right microphone? Did you buy the rest of the gear needed to have a professional studio? Do you have an acoustically treated space? Do you have the acting skills, experience and education needed to fulfill the needs of voiceover clients? Do you know the expectations of voiceover clients? Are you able to be competitive when auditioning side by side with voice actors who have been doing this much longer than you? Do you know how to properly audition for work? Do you have a professionally produced voiceover demo? Do you have a brand, website, social strategy, and resume? Do you know what to charge for your voiceover services and how to price yourself both fairly and competitively? If you answer no to any of these questions...you are not ready to start working as a voiceover actor.

Acting at its heart is a creative process, a craft that is honed throughout the career...but when is it the actor's creativity and when is it the clients? I recently did a job, they loved my audition and my voice and wanted to sign me on to multiple videos. I had a chat with the client about what they wanted, whether they liked the style and they said they loved what I did with it. I do the script, I'm really happy with how it is and send it back, with the option of notes as they weren't able to do a live directed session. Notes come back, they want a completely different read. The client's boss didn't like it, didn't like the style but liked my voice. We then had another chat, I wanted to know exactly what the boss wanted. Turns out it was a completely different style and approach to the read, once we had done a few test reads and gotten the go ahead, I recorded the full thing and they were really happy, not only with the finished product but knowing they had chosen someone who would work with them and could adapt even if it was a creative choice I personally wouldn't have gone with. Voice acting is a business, I provide a service whether it's for chaotic video game characters or professional corporate explainer videos. There is definitely a creative process but at the end of the day, I want to do what's best for my clients, and they know that I have the ability to adapt to their needs. What are your opinions on creativity in regards to client and provider? 🎙 Looking for a dependable, engaging voiceover artist? 🎙 Reach out via DM or visit my website: https://lnkd.in/etX_N5K8 🎙 Always happy to chat!

Consistency challenge day 4. MORE THAN COMMERCIALS: Understanding voiceover types. Did you know that the voice behind Maui in "Moana" was Dwayne Johnson, also known as “The Rock”? Did you also know that that is a type of voiceover? Wait, were you thinking voiceovers are restricted to the voices you hear on your favourite TV or radio commercials? Well, voiceover is a very broad field that isn't limited to advertising alone. For instance, the voice you hear during a news report, where events or images are explained, is also a type of voiceover. Yesterday, we learnt what a voiceover is. Today, we'll briefly explore the various types of voiceovers. 1. CHARACTER VOICEOVER. A character voiceover is one which involves actors voicing fictional characters. This can be seen in video games, animated films like cartoons, animes etc. 2. NARRATIVE VOICEOVER: This voiceover involves telling a story. It can be seen in documentaries and films where a narrator explains occurrences in the visual being shown. 3. COMMERCIAL VOICEOVER: This is the voiceover you hear in advertisements. Here, the voiceover is used to highlight the benefits of the product or service. This is my main area of expertise. 4. AUDIOBOOK VOICEOVER: This voiceover involves reading stories in a way that brings the story to life. It is basically making a book into an audio format. This is also another type of voiceover which I'm into. Lastly, remember that “annoying” network lady who tells you “You have one minute remaining” when you're on a call with your boo? Or that one who says “The number you're trying to call is switched off” That is also a type of voiceover! In summary, voiceovers are everywhere around us—on the news, in advertisements, in movies, cartoons, on transits, at the bank, on our mobile phones, etc. What voiceovers have you come across this week? I'd love to hear about them in the comments. #voiceover #voiceovertypes #voiceoverartist #consistencychallnge #20daysconsistency ©Favespills

Sunday VO Tip: Someone recently emailed me saying they don't need training to get into voiceover work. To put it bluntly, saying you don't need training is like wanting to become a pilot and thinking you can fly a plane just because you've been on a few flights! First, there is little demand for impressions. Instead of focusing on impersonating cartoon characters, aim to voice REAL HUMAN BEINGS. Turn on a commercial and listen to the voiceovers—they sound like your neighbor, banker, hair stylist, and plumber. They're authentic, relatable, and believable. If you're committed to succeeding in the voiceover industry, mastering these performances is essential. And of course, training is a necessity! #voiceovers

Character work is my favourite voiceover work. So it was a joy to jam 4 characters into one itty bitty TKMAxx clip on my new commercial demo reel. 👽 This was never going to form the first spot on my reel because it starts with an accent that isn't my own. And in terms of authenticity and allowing the listener to become acquainted with my natural voice straight away - we went for a different opener. Something which I think should be (and generally is) a golden rule on voiceover demo reels, no matter the niche. But what I really loved was combining very natural, grounded characters, with very silly ones. It feels very British to me?! How do you weave your favourite kind of work in to the rest of your work? #commercial #voiceover #radioadvertising #audioproduction #voiceactor #voiceoverartist ---------------------------- Fancy using some relatable and natural voiceover on your next project? A Career in Voiceover is Just That - A Career This. Is. Hard. Work. There's nothing easy about talking into a microphone for a living. If you're looking to make fast or easy cash, a part-time income, or a quick side hustle - voiceover is probably NOT the answer. You'll find the most success in voiceovers by choosing to (eventually) make it a full-time career AFTER you dedicate yourself to being a student of the craft. Having a great voice or being told that you have a great voice does not make you voiceover-ready. Having a great voice is only a very small part of this business. In fact, in some areas of voiceover, having a frequently complimented voice is something to overcome! This is because you must know how to use and market your voice. Voiceover talent are not simple well-spoken individuals – they are actors who make words come alive. Learning to use and market your voice will be an investment of time (lots and lots of time!) money, and open-mindedness. You must be teachable and flexible and able to hear criticism about your voice and your performance. You must be willing to work hard and you must be willing to fail. Voice actors are risk-takers.
