📍 EPP Nantes 2024 We were thrilled to attend the EPP Nantes 2024 event, gaining valuable insights into the pig industry across Europe. Key Highlights: IFIP - Christine Rouget: 🔹 France: 3rd largest pig producer in Europe with nearly a million sows. 80% of production in Western France. 🔹 Pork: most consumed meat in France at 31.1kg per head per year. Ker Angel - Laurent Dartois: 🔹 Collaboration with Intermarche, focusing on innovative pig farming methods. 🔹 Practices include free farrowing, straw-based finishing, and no antibiotic usage. 🔹 Financial incentives above market rates for sustainable practices. Inaporc - Apolline Pissot: 🔹 National Pork Interprofessional Association. 🔹 CSR strategy on food sovereignty, sector attractiveness, environmental protection, food safety, and animal welfare. Attending EPP Nantes 2024 was a fantastic opportunity to deepen our understanding of the pig industry in our European neighbours and to bring back new ideas. #EPPNantes2024 #PigFarming #PorkIndustry #Agriculture #Sustainability #QualityEquipment

We are what we eat and what we eat eats. Innovative pathways in sustainable agri-food systems are better and go farther when the "human-planet-ecosystem services" triangle approach is at the core. Great news, #FAO! #Onehealth #Innovation
FAO today launched a new action-oriented, country-focused initiative to reduce the need for antimicrobials on farms, amid the growing threat posed by #AntimicrobialResistance in the food and agriculture sector, impacting terrestrial and aquatic animal health, plants and the environment and causing significant economic losses to farmers across the globe. Reduce the Need for Antimicrobials on Farms for Sustainable Agrifood Systems Transformation (RENOFARM) initiative aims to provide countries with policy support, technical assistance, capacity building, and knowledge sharing to help reduce the need for antimicrobials in livestock production, prioritizing animal health and welfare, mitigating environmental impact, and enhancing food security and nutrition thus, helping to achieve the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals. #SDGs #AMR #RENOFARM https://lnkd.in/dYcxtWRh

The hearing of Commissioner hopeful for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen has just finished. This is how it went 👇 🌾 He confirmed the consensus shown in the report of the Strategic Dialogue will remain the basis on which he will build his Vision for the Future of EU Agriculture, but we are already seeing some cherry picking, especially when it comes to prioritising a Sustainable Livestock Strategy over a Plant-based Foods Strategy; 🌾 He showed creativity when it comes to find ways to financially support farmers in the sustainable transition in the short and medium term, but missed the chance to acknowledge the flaws of current policies in doing so; 🌾 He confirmed the Green Deal will remain the compass for EU agriculture - affirming the need to reduce CO2 emissions from the farmed animal sector - but expressed no intention to encourage reduction of meat and dairy consumption; 🌾 He seemed to take animal welfare as a given, but offered no clear commitment to phasing out cages, improving animal welfare standards and promoting regenerative agriculture; 🌾 He didn’t place enough emphasis on the Food part of his portfolio - a missed opportunity for a Commissioner who has the mandate to break silos and take a food systems approach. References to the need to reduce pesticides and promote organic farming are positive, but this is not enough. The European Commission must set an ambitious vision that clearly spells out how to achieve humane, sustainable food systems, and commits to using CAP money to promote higher welfare animal farming, as recommended in the Strategic Dialogue report. We need a food system that works for animals, people and our planet. #CAP #SustainableFoodSystems #AnimalWelfare #PlantBased #RegenerativeAgriculture #ExtensiveAgriculture #StrategicDialogue #EPHearings #EndIt #EndTheCageAge #PlanetaryBoundaries #FarmToFork #ClimateChange

🌿🐄 Exciting new research reveals a win-win solution for climate change and food security! A new study shows how improving animal health could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock farming without compromising food production. Key points: - Common but overlooked health issues in livestock contribute to increased emissions - Improving animal health can reduce emissions while supporting farmers and food security - This approach is especially crucial for low- and middle-income countries As Dr. Frances Ryan from SEBI-Livestock at the University of Edinburgh notes, "Reducing emissions by improving animal health allows us to address environmental issues while protecting people who rely on livestock." This groundbreaking research opens up new possibilities for sustainable livestock management and climate finance in the sector. 🐂 PATHWAYS ‘Sustainable Food Forum’ 📆 Organised in the framework of the Pathways Project, the 'Sustainable Food Forum’ discussed the future of EU livestock systems. The project is a 5-year EU Horizon 2020 project, coordinated by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, comprising 30 partners from 12 countries, among which the Biodynamic Federation Demeter International. 🌍 With the aim of reducing environmental impacts while addressing societal demands for safe, nutritious, and affordable meat and dairy products, the Pathways project aims to co-develop visions, scenarios and transition pathways for sustainable livestock husbandry and food systems based on innovative practice hubs. 🐂 The various practice hubs were presented during the Forum including the one dedicated to the Demeter Heumilchbauern, a group of farmers in the southwest of Germany, who decided to put animal welfare and harmonious integration of livestock at the centre of their farming systems. They implement 100% pasture-fed cow-calf dairy systems and invested in developing solutions to practice on-farm slaughter offering their animals a dignified ending. 👉 Find out more: https://bit.ly/43JK7TI 👉 On the Demeter Heumilchbauern: https://bit.ly/3UeM089 #pathways #PATHWAYSProject #ClimateSmartLivestock #animalwelfare #AnimalRights #SustainableAgriculture #RegenerativeAgriculture #BiodynamicAgriculture #BestPractices #SustainableFoodSystems #SustainableLivestockSystems #Demeter #DemeterCertified #DemeterStandards

Panama, 12 March 2024. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is holding an expert meeting in Panama to address challenges, options and possible ways forward for sustainable management of ticks in livestock and slowing the emergence and spread of resistant ticks in livestock. The emergence of highly resistant tick populations has led to unprecedented failure of acaricides in livestock, jeopardising sustainable animal production and food security. "We are just a few days away from the 38th session of the FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean, where the challenges and priority issues related to food and agriculture will be discussed. And we are sure that these animal health issues will be present in the debates of the representatives of the governments of our countries, from the One Health approach »
