In the past three months as a Regional Director, I've been deeply immersed in the vibrant heart of Detroit, working closely with our local communities. The journey has been both enlightening and profoundly rewarding, offering me firsthand insights into the power of tailored community outreach. Here are some key takeaways: 1. Listening is Fundamental: True engagement starts with listening. Detroit's diverse voices have taught me that understanding unique community needs leads to more impactful initiatives. 2. Collaboration Over Competition: Partnering with local leaders and organizations isn't just beneficial; it's essential. These collaborations strengthen our outreach efforts and multiply the impacts of our shared goals. 3. Adaptability is Key: Each community has its dynamics and challenges. Warrior to Love: Show-Up I recently had an inspiring meeting with Councilman Michael Boylan from Jacksonville City Council District 6. It reminded me of the power of community engagement and the importance of taking action to drive change. Years ago, I considered a political career, but my wife and I decided it wasn't the right path for us. Instead, I focused on connecting with our local representatives, believing that true change starts with us. During our conversation, we discussed the book "A Quiet Revolution," which explores the history of Jacksonville's consolidation. Jacksonville Historical Society Both Councilman Boylan and I share a passion for history and a vision for progress in our city. We reflected on the challenges and the numerous failed attempts to unite and advance Jacksonville over the years. One of the biggest questions remains: how do you unite a community divided in the largest city by land mass in the USA? While I am still working on the answer, I know that getting involved and building relationships is a significant step forward. As a private citizen, I've had the privilege of connecting with some of the best professionals and actively participating in our community. My passion lies in solving problems and fostering resilience in relationships. Nothing happens unless you make it happen. It takes everyone to participate in creating and sustaining livable communities. Everything starts with you! Hollywood 4WRD's first member meeting of November today (2-3pm via zoom) will feature a founding H4WRD Board Member and a CORO Fellow digging in on a couple of topics very relevant to our community: -- Louis Abramson, Senior Physical Scientist-Adjunct at RAND, will present an overview of his recent report on the troubling rise of "Rough Sleeping", a term that refers to unhoused people living without the protection of a vehicle, tent, or makeshift dwelling; -- William Chao, a recent UCLA graduate now working as a Coro Southern California fellow, will share the results of his recent field research on interim housing innovations across California, exploring tools and options that equip our local governments to build more shelters more quickly. William's research project was a direct response to H4WRD's 9/18 Community Summit and will offer a deeper dive on housing solutions proposed at that event. Not a H4WRD member? Not a problem. Today, I want to highlight the power of community success in negotiations. Far too often, we view negotiation as a solitary endeavor—a battle of wills between individuals. But some of the most impactful negotiations are woven from the threads of collective effort, diverse perspectives, and shared goals. Take Project Phoenix, a small community initiative aimed at revitalizing our local park. This wasn't about a single voice leading the charge; it was a symphony of community members—neighbors, local businesses, and civic leaders—each bringing their own strengths to the table. 1️⃣ **Diverse Perspectives:** The variety of voices meant that all community needs were considered. Kids wanted playgrounds, seniors desired walking paths, and local artists envisioned spaces for public art. By collectively negotiating with the city council, we achieved a design that catered to everyone. 2️⃣ **Shared Vision:** The foundation of our success was a clear, united vision. Every negotiation step was rooted in the shared goal of creating a vibrant, inclusive space. This unity made our proposals compelling and hard to dismiss. 3️⃣ **Mobilizing Resources:** Local businesses contributed funds, volunteers offered their time, and a coordinated campaign swamped social media with our mission. This collective effort provided the leverage needed to secure additional funding and support from municipal authorities. 4️⃣ **Resilience and Adaptability:** When initial negotiations hit a snag, the community rallied. Alternate plans were devised, showing city officials our flexibility and determination. This persistence paid off, demonstrating our project's viability and our commitment. In the end, the new Phoenix Park stands not just as a testament to successful negotiation but as a symbol of what a united community can achieve. It reminds us that negotiation isn’t merely about individual success; it’s about building a better environment for everyone involved. A key focus of Flemington Works is to understand and disrupt the conditions that hold social and economic inequality in place. One such condition is power. To inform our work, we have used this beautiful Far West Community Partnerships model. In practice, when designing and delivering our recent workshop series, this meant doing pre work with service providers and funding and policy partners, demonstrating humility, delivering sessions with Community Advisors in advance of workshops to ensure they felt comfortable and confident with the proposed content and process, establishing an agreed way of working together, curating spaces and seating, using a paid participation model, and ensuring table facilitators had a connection to Community. What efforts have you used to help shift power when working collaboratively?

“Each of us has a choice to choose chaos or building community,” Dr. Tatum explains. To build a community of acceptance, we must actively choose community over chaos and then find out who’s missing from our community, who needs to be invited to the conversation, and whose voice isn’t being heard. “Who’s missing?” she asked. “If we answer that question, we’ll have a roadmap. So, ask the question: Who’s missing? - Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum author of “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” Are you making decisions on behalf of your organization or business? Who have you asked for input from to inform your decisions? Whose voice is missing? Have you engaged staff? The clients you serve? What about hard-to-reach people? Engaging diverse voices in decision-making is critical; however, it is difficult to implement in practice. Our team is working on pulling together a high-value (low to no cost) webinar series focusing on "Community Building." When Nate Geinzer left his City Manager role nearly two years ago and determined to focus on consulting, three experiences drove the direction he would take Double Haul Solutions and his interest in community building: 1) Working on community building efforts in the City of Port Huron's Southside/South Park Neighborhood 2) Participating in the 2022 Community Builders Camp hosted by Doug Griffiths, MBA, of 13 Ways Inc. and 3) Teaching a great group of Masters of Public Administration Students at Oakland University. Because Nate is wired to collaborate, we wanted to create an opportunity for our followers and networks to help shape this emerging content. Our goal will be to have sessions build on one another, leaving participants not only inspired, but equipped with actionable strategies. Call your city council members to provide problem & possible solution. 2. Call your state lege, provide same message. 3. Buy Shares in Centerpoint & speak at their shareholder meeting. 4. GO VOTE 5. Register to speak to our mayor & council at the next city council meeting. You get 3 minutes, be concise about the problem and solution. 6. Get involved in your local HOA, Super neighborhood, or committees for your Management District - all of these organizations work together w/COH and while their impact may be hyper-local, it's a terrific way to get your feet wet & begin understanding how managing a city with millions of people works.
