The Scottish Government’s Digital Directorate has published a report with recommendations for increasing the value of open data from the country’s public sector. It may seem to be a late move - open data has now been on the public sector agenda for several years - and the main points are broad brush rather than detailed. But it is a step in the right direction for public services in Scotland. https://lnkd.in/ewwUeu2M #opendata #scotland

National statistical systems share challenges and opportunities in meeting public needs for high quality data. It was an honor to present to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation of the Government of India today. Melissa Chiu and I presented findings and conclusions from the CNSTAT visioning series, “Towards a 21st Century National Data Infrastructure for the United States'' Thank you to Adil Zainulbhai, Sonalde Desai, and Sharan Sharma for making this exchange of ideas possible. In honor of #OpenDataDay2024, I’d like to reflect on the remarkable strides the official statistics community has made in embracing open data principles since its introduction during the UN Statistical Commission Friday seminar back in March 2017. From the outset, we emphasized four key pillars for open data implementation: partnership, technology, legislation and institution setting, and capacity building and resource mobilization. Fast forward to today, and open data is now firmly entrenched in the UNSC's official proceedings, with the focus squarely on implementation. This includes bolstering capacity development to support countries in integrating open data principles not just within National Statistical Offices, but across the entire statistical system. During our side event on February 29, we heard inspiring stories from Namibia, Jamaica, and Maldives showcasing how open data has enhanced coordination, harmonization, and data exchange, ultimately fostering greater user engagement and greater data impact. However, the discussion also underscored the need for continued momentum and support from partners. United Nations Statistics Division and ODW laid out their plans to assist countries in maximizing the value of data, recognizing that more work lies ahead, and more support is needed. As NSOs take on an increasingly vital role as data stewards, it's imperative that open data principles and practices permeate throughout the entire data ecosystem. As 2024 races on, I am looking forward to scaling Open Data Watch’s capacity building work with countries. And while the title on my UN badge may read differently at the UNSC’s ahead, a constant that remains is my commitment for supporting countries as they navigate the open data revolution. 💾 Data is becoming increasingly important in today’s world! To make public sector information (e.g., statistics, weather data, research etc.) widely accessible and reusable for everyone, open data and high-value datasets are needed. Access to these data is available through the official European data portal as well as national and thematic open data portals. The Open Data Directive provides a legal framework for open data. The rights you have in relation to this data are the following: 🔹 Request and receive data from public authorities 🔹 Rejection of a request requires an explanation 🔹 Normally available free of charge 🔹 Non-discriminatory conditions for re-use in similar fields Additional rules for high-value datasets will apply from 9 June 2024.
