Yesterday’s final session at the Future of Federal Government Summit was a deep dive into “Exploring Data Innovation: The Federal Journey with AI & Data Analytics,” where an exceptional lineup of panellists shared their perspectives on how AI and data are transforming government operations. Our panellists, including Marek Rucinski from Australian Taxation Office, Kayelle Drinkwater from Department of Social Services (DSS), Leigh Berrell, from National Archives of Australia, and Elizabeth Moore from Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), each brought unique insights to the table: 💠 ATO has been integrating machine learning into its operations for years, enhancing client experience, fraud detection, and operational efficiency. Marek emphasised that a key takeaway for successful AI implementation is ensuring data readiness. 💠 ABC highlighted the vital role of trust in public media. Elizabeth shared that, while AI is valuable behind the scenes to support efficiencies, news content must remain curated by journalists to maintain editorial integrity and ensure public trust. 💠 The National Archives is approaching AI with cautious optimism. Leigh noted the challenges in digitising records at scale and emphasised the need for careful review of classified information before digitisation. The Archives’ work in this area reflects the importance of data standards and human oversight in safeguarding sensitive data. 💠 Social Services aims to leverage data insights to deliver more impactful and responsive services. Kayelle discussed how understanding data can lead to tailored support, helping the government better serve citizens in need. We’re grateful to our panellists for an enlightening discussion and for showcasing the power of AI and data in federal government. Their expertise continues to drive Australia’s journey towards a more innovative, data-driven future. Thank you again to Marek, Kayelle, Leigh, and Elizabeth for closing out the summit with such inspiring insights. #FSTGovFederal #FSTMedia #FSTGovernment

#Sundayreading Today, I had the chance to read “Private-by-Default: A Data Framework for the age of Personal AIs” by Paul Jurcys, PhD and Mark Fenwick (link in the first comment). Two aspects of their analysis stood out to me, as they strongly resonate with the work we’ve been pursuing at euroconsumers: 1. The LinkedIn case reference: the authors discuss LinkedIn’s change o policy for scraping user data for AI training without consent. This a case Euroconsumers brought to light through a formal complaint last summer. Our advocacy was instrumental in pushing this issue forward, leading to its submission to the European Data Protection Board. We now eagerly await the EDPB’s opinion, expected by the end of this year. It’s gratifying to see academic recognition of this pivotal case, which highlights the urgent need for transparency and accountability in the AI space. 2. The economic value of data: the paper’s exploration of the economic value of personal data aligns with our “My Data is Mine” declaration from 2017. Seeing this principle featured as a core part of the authors’ framework reaffirms its relevance in building a fair and human-centric digital future. Kudos to the authors for this thought-provoking contribution!

In recent decades the New Zealand government has made openness and transparency one of its key policy objectives regarding its collection, use, and sharing of data. Since 2011, a framework of principle-led policies has been developed that build on these core principles, including policies aimed at ensuring that government agencies can responsibly harness the incalculable benefits of "big data" and algorithmic analysis, while preserving public trust in government processes and systems. This update focuses on the guardrails that the government has put in place to regulate its own use of data algorithms in public processes. It also looks at how these guardrails have evolved in parallel with the explosion of investment in algorithms and AI globally, and the signals of what is coming next.
