Really looking forward to strategizing with our Finnish colleagues about how to get organics on the offensive—in policy, markets and in farm communities, as support for the excellent work already being done in these areas by Pro Luomu ry and the organic movement in Finland. This is happening at the Organic Food Day in Helsinki October 8th, where I am speaking on behalf of IFOAM - Organics International. I will be sharing lessons from Denmark and around the world about: ✔ What national policies are driving organic farm conversion, market development, public procurement and innovation. ✔And how market partnerships with retail and food service leaders can grow organic sales beyond niche to becoming the norm. In Denmark, world leader in organic sales, organic market shares for basic foods like milk, eggs, flour, oatmeal and many fruits and vegetables are at 30-60 percent today. More importantly, I will share lessons about “the how” of creating real impact on today’s political and market ecosystems that determine what we eat and how we farm, and are the key to upscaling organics. How we in Denmark and other nations: ✔ Built political support and alliances for organic policies, and ✔ Created strong partnerships with retail and public procurement leaders (and consumers!) on growing the market. ✔ Built capacity in organic organisations capable of driving change in policy and markets ✔And how organic processors, farmers and food professionals—when they stand together—can move these mountains! I love coffee not just for the caffeine rush, but also the kaleidoscope of flavors. What I did not know was how much lower the carbon footprint of organic coffee is relative to coffee that is in transition to organic production. Experts from Red Peruana Ciclo de Vida y Ecología Industrial PELCAN wanted to determine the carbon footprint of small organic coffee producers in a cooperative based in Cajamarca, Peru. One of the key takeaways: Farms with the lowest carbon footprints in the study produced their own fertilizer on site from materials otherwise wasted. A brief discussion with Colehour Bondera yesterday underscored for me the need for dedicated academic research and support for organic farmers, particularly coffee farmers, in Hawai'i. Sourcing local inputs, and encouraging farmers to recycle otherwise wasted biomaterial from coffee production, requires mentorship and dedicated support systems. USDA must do better, and so should local and state governments, in providing permanent funding beyond TOPP (Transition to Organic Partnership Program) to fill this research gap. The price of shipping in fertilizers/composts/inputs, be it for organic or chemically intensive farming, immediately skyrockets the carbon footprint even when producers wish to do the right thing.
