Join us at ISGC-2025 (https://lnkd.in/eGKkiVFb) from May 12th to May 16th 2025 to meet Prof Douglas MacFarlane Farlane from Monash University (Australia), one of our confirmed plenary speakers. His research focuses broadly on creating a genuinely sustainable nitrogen cycle. Current-day nitrogen chemistry relies on two heavily greenhouse gas producing reactions: the Haber Bosch process for the reduction of N2 to NH3 and the Ostwald process for the oxidation of NH3 to HNO3. An electrochemical or photo-electrochemical approach to both of the reactions is possible, based on renewable electricity, and his group and others are making progress in that direction. In the longer run the direct production of C-N bonds from N2 and CO2 is an enticing possibility. More information at https://lnkd.in/e_KaU_k4. If you want to be part of ISGC-2025, please create your account online at https://lnkd.in/eGKkiVFb The call for abstracts is now open and will close on December 15th. I had the honor of presenting a seminar on the critical topic of "Carbon Credits: Can Industrialized Countries Simply Buy Their Way Out of Their Savings Obligations?" at FAU Erlangen -Nuremberg. My discussion delved into the engineering perspective of how the carbon credit system operates, the challenges it faces, the types of projects involved, and future optimization. During the seminar, I highlighted the intricate mechanisms behind carbon credits, focusing on the optimization of efficiency for credit verification and the overall sustainability of this approach. While carbon credits can serve as a temporary measure to mitigate carbon emissions, I emphasized that they are not a long-term solution. Instead, they should be viewed as a transitional tool to aid us as we shift towards fully renewable energy systems. Understanding the technical and logistical challenges of implementing carbon credit systems is crucial for enhancing their effectiveness and ensuring that they genuinely contribute to global emission reduction goals. I explored various projects and innovations designed to optimize the verification process, ensuring that the credits represent real and additional reductions in greenhouse gases. #CarbonCredits #SustainableEngineering #EnvironmentalManagement #RenewableEnergyTransition #Gratitude #EngineeringSeminar #FAU

𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 – 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 ♻💡🤝 The Paris Agreement has led to companies committing to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), with the aim of reducing their short-term carbon footprint by more than 40%, and long term by up to 100%* In 2023, the number of companies committed to SBTi reached 4000. However, achieving these ambitious goals cannot be done through continuous improvement, energy management, and simple business cases alone. Instead, companies need to develop a master plan that incorporates “future state planning”. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀? Future state planning involves designing a future state where the goals of significant carbon reduction can be achieved. This may include full electrification and novel production processes, also with focus on how we believe the technical opportunities and surrounding society will be in the future. The future state also needs to address the needed robustness, possible expansion of production capacity, resilience and sustainability of the future site 🦾♻ Read more about how we shift our mindset in terms of future state planning and how it can result in concrete plans that include how e.g. sufficient electrical capacity is ordered in due time, and how to think about your equipment in terms of replacement and prioritisation.
