(Personal view) The role of Software-in-the-loop (SiL) in the era of Software-defined vehicle (SDV). The rise of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) brings a transformative approach to automotive development, emphasizing the continuous enhancement of the driving experience even after the start of production (SOP). Through over-the-air (OTA) updates, vehicle applications developed by app developers can evolve dynamically, addressing everything from ADAS function to infotainment upgrades. SDVs operate on a principle of loose coupling with hardware, utilizing an HW abstraction layer that allows software to run independently of specific hardware setups. This flexibility greatly enhances the updateability of vehicle applications. However, creating the vehicle applications could be challenging, because these applications could not be tested properly without access to physical vehicle systems. Facing the challenge of testing these applications without physical hardware, Software-in-the-Loop (SiL) testing becomes crucial. SiL employs virtual hardware components, such as virtual ECUs and environmental models, enabling thorough functional testing without the hardware dependency on the virtual testing environment. This ensures that software can be validated for functionality and reliability before reaching consumers. As we adapt to this shift, SiL doesn't just serve as a tool but as a fundamental strategy to guarantee the quality and performance of SDV software, shaping a future where vehicle experiences are defined by software adaptability and upgradability.
