This short piece has a good, quantitative overview of the current state of health plan coverage of the new weight loss drugs. A few facts: obesity is a predictor of other, costly medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, as this piece from the Mayo Clinic makes clear (https://lnkd.in/gdVMdqZx). For numerous reasons, including genetics and the body's adaptations to changes in caloric intake, non-medicinal weight loss efforts are notoriously unsuccessful, particularly over the longer-term. Therefore, the evidence is accumulating that treating obesity PREVENTS the occurrence of other diseases which both cost a lot of money to treat and substantially increase mortality risk while decreasing people's quality of life. Nonetheless, as these data make clear, although many health plans will cover weight-loss drugs once someone has diabetes or heart disease (although even here the coverage is much less than 100%), many fewer plans cover obesity treatment as a preventive measure. Once again, third party health plan administrators have signaled their complete disdain for people's welfare and lifespan. #healthbenefits #health #morbidity #weightloss #diabetes #healthinsurers

South Park takes on GLP-1s and navigating the HC system (yes you are reading this right - the same South Park my 15 year old watches on repeat). Let’s just say I’m super familiar with this fact after our RV trip last week… This episode is a treasure trove of healthcare satire including a new catchy song we should all learn. Apparently it dropped 2 days ago and it’s pure gold. BP2 Health and The Reverse Mullet Healthcare Podcast only linked the “PG” part of the episode related to HC - be forewarned if you watch the full episode, it’s South Park! Here are some of the highlights from the transcript. “We want to file a claim to get my friend’s weight-loss drugs paid for” “let me just speak with our medical director first. Sorry, but we don’t pay for medicines for obesity because it’s not a disease.” “The medical director’s job is just to say no.” “Look, my friend’s mom has been paying you people for years, and his doctor says his weight is a medical concern, and obesity is a disease.” “calm down I didn’t realize I was dealing with someone who had so much determination. If you do a little more work, I think we can get your medications paid for.” “you see, the doctors and the pharmaceutical companies and the insurance companies all kind of work together. So all you have to do is navigate the American HC system. ♪ We’re gonna navigate the American Health care system ♪ ♪ It’s there for you and me ♪ ♪ We’re gonna get better ♪ ♪ And we’re gonna be strong ♪ ♪ And as healthy as can be ♪ “I need to send you to Imaging.” “ Just fill out these forms.” “I just… I just filled ’em out at the last place.” “I can’t sign this for insurance. His original doctor needs to sign this.” ♪ We go back to the doctor To get that thing for insurance ♪ Then go back to insurance… ♪ “We need you to get a second opinion from a doctor who’s in network.” “We need these filled out and then faxed to your insurance company.” ♪ We’re filling out forms ♪ ♪ And we’re scanning those forms ♪ And then we’re emailing those forms ♪ ♪ To get them back to insurance. “We need confirmation from a different specialist.” ♪ It’s the best system of them all♪ ♪ And we go back to the doctor ♪ ♪ We go back to the specialist ♪ ♪ Who talks to the insurance company ♪ ♪ That faxes the medical advisor ♪ Who’s on a boat in the Maldives ♪ And were going in one place ♪ ♪ And we’re coming out the other place ♪ ♪ And we’re back over here now ♪ ♪ And I was just over there ♪ ♪ And I’m getting confused, and it’s getting dark ♪ ♪ And my mind is all different colors ♪ ♪ And I think I’m lost. ♪ But seriously, when South Park can sum up the mess of the high cost pharmaceutical preauth process perfectly it’s pretty pathetic. Having a kiddo that has had chronic migraines for over 10 years I’m all too familiar with the maddening absurdity of preauth. Kudos to Donny Beaver for finding this gem.
