Viewers, fans, teams, sponsors and even tournament organizers themselves often don't stop and think of the purpose of their #esports event, and how their tournament format may impact their goals. Usually, pre-determined formats are used and copy+pasted tournament after tournament. With ELO Agency, we specialize in looking at the objectives of our clients and build the event to ensure they are reached. Achieving this can be a complex balancing act and requires a deep understanding of the different stakeholder needs: players, viewers/broadcast, and sales/sponsors. For players, the "least random" outcome is most important. This often means more matches, which can help ensure the best team or player wins (in other words, a BO1 is random, a BO3 less so). Formats like double elimination or swiss may make sense because they offer more chances. However, more matches mean longer schedules and player and viewer fatigue. From the viewer and broadcast perspective, simplicity is key. Formats that are easy to understand and follow, like single elimination, are viewer-friendly. They keep the audience engaged with straightforward progressions of teams and storylines. Keep in mind that this is less important for the more hardcore viewers. For sales/sponsors, the goal is often to maximize content hours. More matches can mean more content, more sponsorship opportunities, and higher engagement. Ultimately, designing a tournament format requires a delicate balance between fairness for players, simplicity for viewers, and content hours for sales/sponsors. By carefully considering the needs and preferences of each group, we can create a format that is fair, engaging, and commercially viable.
