Through Parcel Pending by Quadient' open locker network in the UK 🇬🇧 UK is the biggest European Market for Ecommerce & Logistic Market : Logistic in 2022 was valued US$ 478.3 Billion while Ecommerce was valued US$131.5 Billion in 2023. There's no better choice then to move to OOH for a Market like UK, where in 2022 (Pitney Bowes Shipping Index) 5.1Billion 📦 have been shipped. This multi year contract will let Royal Mail customers to 📍 pickup and dropoff parcels 📦 from May 24 (200 sites to start), aiming to reach 3,000 Quadient Lockers in the next years. International Distribution Services PLC (mother Company of Royal Mail & GLS) shared yesterday Q1 results. Q1 is "3 months to the end of June 2024", as fiscal year starts on April 1st. All figures are positive, except for Letters 📮 where there's no hope of getting back on pre-digital volumes. That's why Royal Mail is asking again to review the USO (Universal Service Obbligation) Agreement with Ofcom. As Mr Seidenberg said in Jan about Royal Mail machine "it is simply not sustainable to maintain a delivery network built for 20bn letters when we are now only delivering 7bn". There's a gap of 13bn. Every e-commerce company is pursuing a low-cost parcel delivery method to reflect the advantages of e-commerce. At present, if the freight of a 5-pound parcel within the size of 0.5 cubic feet can be delivered to the whole United States (excluding remote areas) at $5, it will have a monopoly price advantage. However, in the current situation, the whole United States is too large, and the cost of the first-level trunk network is very high, which accounts for the cost of the entire parcel. This is why the parcel business is currently divided into different regions, because of the transportation cost of the first-level trunk line. But what if 5 pounds can be delivered at $5 within zone 2? Is it competitive? We've launched a new partnership with global parcel locker operator Quadient, providing customers with more choice to make sending and receiving parcels as convenient as possible. The partnership means our customers will have access to parcel lockers for the first time. 📦 The first lockers will launch in Coventry in April, with further locations opening in the following months. Around 1,500 are expected by the end of the year, with further plans for 3,000 across the UK. The lockers will initially allow customers to drop off returns and pre-paid parcels before being expanded so that customers can have items delivered to the lockers for pick up. The launch is an important part of our strategy to continue to make sending and receiving parcels as convenient as possible by adding more choice. The partnership with Quadient adds to the recent announcement that Royal Mail customers will be able to use up to 5,000 Collect+ stores to drop off and collect parcels. Together, this will increase the number of locations where customers can drop off parcels to more than 21,000, including 3,000 lockers, 11,500 Post Office branches, 5,000 Collect+ stores, 1,200 Royal Mail Customer Service Points and 1,200 parcel postboxes. Thanks for the article Andre Pharand, it made me sit for a minute and think about the differences and opportunities lockers face, which I really enjoyed. I do see that the US is different, but thankfully, I remain confident that the UK and Europe are ripe for locker growth as the population density/smaller geographies, the delivery/stakeholder economics, the dense locker deployments, the parcel volume and several other aspects all work to stimulate successful use cases. I agree with you about the proliferation of parcel locker manufacturers and your point about the lack of differentiation. I see consolidation in the future, but for the short term there are so many deployments that all can survive. I also agree that if you ask people what type of delivery they want, they will almost always say, home delivery. Who wouldn't you want a parcel delivered directly to your door for the same price or free. But, I think that price model may change. I also believe that what the Ford Motor Company proved, is correct, in that consumers don't always know what they want, until they have it. Lockers are a great product BUT they only work when they are densely deployed and only flourish when they are slipper distance. Trials never show ROI if they are small deployments, that is the CFOs dilemma when looking at these trials. It is a long term, capital intensive game, not for the faint hearted. Several of my locker-lover community have already mentioned many of the topics that those thinking about lockers should consider (ie. growth & customer experience of returns, NPS scores for lockers once deployed, scalability, etc). A couple of other things I consider is the growth of C2C and re-commerce because the price points are so low for re-commerce that OOH/lockers becomes a requirement and we are seeing volumes have been growing exponentially over the last few years. It seems you have the data, but I am not surprised that Amazon can make D2D profitable as they have an ungodly delivery density, but I am surprised that all carriers are as blessed. It certainly was not the case outside the US. I am glad that you mentioned that successful use cases do, and will exist, in the US (ie. universities, many densely populated cities or large apartment/condo blocks). These could be quite large projects as the size/population of the US is so large that these "smaller" projects could dwarf European projects quite quickly. It is my opinion, and maybe yours I don't know, that investment money should be made in lockers and will be successful in various scenarios everywhere.
