Foundation FSSC’s Post

This week, global leaders gathered in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, at the IFC - International Finance Corporation's 11th International Food Safety Forum. The focus on 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲, 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗔 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 couldn't be more timely. The recent Food Waste Index Report 2024 underscores the critical need to address food waste and its far-reaching impacts. In 2022 alone, 1.05 billion tonnes of food were wasted globally, significantly contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbating food insecurity. The Forums's discussions on robust food safety strategies and food waste reduction for sustainable growth resonate with the findings of the Food Waste Index Report 2024 and the objectives of the FSSC 22000 Additional Scheme Requirement on Food Loss and Waste (FLW). All emphasize the importance of reducing FLW, enhancing sustainability, and maximizing the production of safe and nutritious food worldwide. The 11th International Food Safety Forum hosted by IFC - International Finance Corporation on May 21 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, was a great success! Industry leaders, international organizations, and government representatives came together to discuss food safety, sustainability, food loss and waste prevention, and nutrition enhancement. 🌍🍽️ The insightful discussions raised a series of key priorities, collaborative efforts, and best practices, including: ✔ The need for international standards and holistic approaches to tackle global food safety challenges. ✔Food safety management & governmental support is essential to drive change. ✔IFC and World Health Organization announced a joint assessment tool that aims to aid countries in implementing the new WHO food safety strategy, with Uzbekistan selected as the pilot country. ✔Integrating food nutrition and fortification into sustainable food systems is crucial, as fortification programs provide significant health and productivity benefits at a low cost. ✔Promoting gender diversity and empowering women in leadership roles within the agriculture sector is essential for enhancing national food systems, ensuring safe and nutritious food, and building sustainable, equitable communities. ✔Digitalizing Uzbekistan's agro-industrial sector requires public-private cooperation with government-led digital platforms and private-sector innovation. Thank you to all speakers and attendees for a day of enriching conversations, and special thanks to our donors and partners: FIAS, GAFSP, and Bureau Veritas Group for making this event possible.
