Have you ever wondered how the experiences of past generations might be affecting your own mental health today? Intergenerational trauma happens when the effects of a traumatic event are passed down through families. If someone in a previous generation experiences something deeply distressing—like war, abuse, or discrimination—it can influence how they think, feel, and even how they raise their children. Without realising it, the emotional scars of the past can shape family dynamics and affect the mental health of future generations. The good news is that with awareness and support, these patterns can be understood and broken, leading to healing across generations. If this resonates with you or someone you know, reach out to me via DM to learn more about how therapy can help break the cycle and bring healing to your family 💚 #mentalhealth #psychology #trauma #intergenerationaltrauma

It’s not uncommon for folx to think that therapy is a service that’s reserved for people who’ve hit bottom. However, there are a few issues with this belief. For starters, most of us experience a slow progression into a mental health funk. The slow nature of this progression desensitizes us to our symptoms, and we end up being a poor judge of our current state in life and our baseline functioning. Meaning, our ability to assess our mental health needs is greatly impaired. Secondly, there’s no logic in waiting for things to get really bad. Why waste time decompensating when we could be getting our life back on track? It’s not just the individual experiencing the mental health symptoms, but it’s their entire support system who also suffers when their loved one functions at a lower-than-usual capacity. The best time to seek therapy is when you first start contemplating to get help. We need a paradigm shift in how we view mental illness, emphasizing the primary role that emotional trauma, developmental trauma, and attachment trauma must play in mental health diagnosis. The traditional models often overlook the profound impact that these types of trauma have on an individual's mental health. By recognizing and integrating these factors into our diagnostic criteria, we can move towards a more holistic and effective approach to mental health care. This shift will not only enhance our understanding of mental illnesses but also lead to more targeted and compassionate treatments, ultimately improving the lives of those affected. #MentalHealth #TraumaInformedCare #EmotionalTrauma #DevelopmentalTrauma #AttachmentTrauma #MentalHealthDiagnosis #HolisticHealth #MentalHealthAwareness #CompassionateCare #MentalWellbeing #MentalHealthRevolution #ParadigmShift #MentalHealthMatters
