Formula 1’s Post

As part of Formula 1’s efforts to rationalise the race calendar and make it more sustainable we will be hosting the Canadian Grand Prix earlier than usual from 2026 on the third or fourth weekend of May each year.   The move will allow the European leg of the season to be consolidated into one consecutive period over the European summer months and is planned to remove an additional transatlantic crossing by the Formula 1 community each year, with significant associated carbon reductions. Although I completely understand the rationale behind the decision to change the date, it looks as though this will now potentially conflict with the Indy 500 weekend as well as the May Victoria Day long weekend. Scheduling is becoming increasingly difficult with so many racing series; I understand. I've been to the Montreal GP several times and hotel costs have more than doubled since I was last there in 2022. The same hotel that I paid $350 per night is now $750++ per night for next year! I can't imagine how high the room rates will be on a holiday long weekend paired with Formula 1!!!! Not to mention the insanely long waits to get on and off the island on all event days. Weather in May in Montreal will probably be much cooler and rainy as well. I really do hope that the Montreal GP continues to be successful as this should be every Canadian's F1 fans go-to home race.

Oo no! Anyway bring back the V10s please

If you want to significantly reduce carbon, why not ditch the ridiculous sprint races? Just a thought....

About time. Traveling to Canada after the Monaco Grand Prix just to immediately come back to Europe didn't make any sense. But if we're talking about "rationalise the calendar" maybe we should stop sending the championship finale to the worst track of the calendar. Just saying.

I have to admit that it makes sense to rationalize the travel schedule, but I will miss the June date in Montreal with lovely summer weather.

As a Canadian I'm of two minds about this. I appreciate the sustainability efforts because I thought it didn't make logistical sense to fly to North America and then back to Europe again. But the new timing in late May puts the race over the Victoria Day holiday long weekend, resulting in increased costs, and making what was one of the more affordable races at an ideal time of year weather-wise (mid-summer) into a significantly more expensive proposition. The weekend weather will be significantly cooler, subject to higher risks of springtime rain, and will lose some of the summer feel. It remains to be seen if it was a positive decision but I suppose we all have to sacrifice something for our collective climate future. In the meantime, I hope I can finally make it to the final summertime Canadian Grand Prix to experience what is always a fantastic race.

Do they know Canadians get snow in May. Not every year but we do get snow.
