People around the world are facing unprecedented threats to their well-being, health, and survival, according to The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change's latest report. The report reveals rapidly changing climate is impacting communities everywhere with rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and increased risks of wildfires and droughts. Alarmingly, 10 out of 15 key indicators monitoring climate-related #health hazards have reached record-breaking levels. 📈🚨 Despite these challenges, some progress is being made: the number of countries having developed #climatechange and health Vulnerability and Adaptation assessments grew from 11 in 2022 to 50 in 2023 and those having completed their Health National Adaptation Plans increased from 4 to 43. To mitigate the most severe consequences of climate change, we must implement coordinated and sustained changes across critical sectors, including #energy, transportation, food systems, #agriculture, and #healthcare. 📚 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/eAcdwkFP #ClimateHealth #HealthEquity #Sustainability #ClimateResilience #LancetCountdown #LancetClimate24

The #health impacts of #climatechange are becoming increasingly dire, and the latest data from The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change reveals the urgency of our situation: 📈 In 2023, we witnessed a staggering 167% increase in #heat-related deaths among those aged 65 and older compared to the late '90s. 🌡️ The average exposure to high temperatures posing a moderate health risk reached an unprecedented 1,512 hours this year. ☀️ In 2023, we faced a loss of 512 billion potential labor hours due to heat exposure, equating to a staggering $835 billion in potential income loss. Since 2016, we've seen a nearly 7% reduction in deaths from fossil fuel-derived #airpollution, proving that effective action can yield better health outcomes. We must prioritize #climateresilience, advocate for sustainable practices, and implement policies that prioritize health, with an emphasis on the most vulnerable communities worldwide. The Lancet's Countdown on Healthy & Climate Change in Small Island Developing States highlights the need for more research on climate change and non-communicable diseases. I was involved in the Australian Countdown on Climate Change in Health (2018/2019) - same story: not enough quality food & 'nutrition' security data to consistently measure impacts. I'm hoping that the recent call from the World Health Organisation for better integration of climate & health policies might create greater demand for such data as well as optimize existing data-related investments - including investments specifically aimed at developing the capacity to collect, analyse and translate quality data, into actionable insights for decision-making 🤞 #climateandhealth https://lnkd.in/gTifZYQ9

The Lancet has just released their annual Climate Change & impacts on Health report - at a time when the average temperature last year was 1.45C above per-industrial levels; it's a sobering read. They note that in an increasingly warmer world we are already seeing: - increased mortality rates for the elderly - increased risk to life-threatening weather events - disrupted weather patterns that is increasing desertification and threatening food security or increased precipitation and increased exposure to mosquito -borne diseases such as dengue & malaria - compounding and cascading crises that effect productivity, social and economic well-being If we are to arrest climate change and prevent "the most catastrophic consequences on human development, health, and survival now requires the support and will of all actors in society." #foodsecurity #climatechange #dengue #malaria #polycrisis #climateadaptation #sustainability #environment Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gNTqPbZ3

Shaping Our Future: The 2024 Lancet Countdown Highlights the Urgent Need for Health-Centric Climate Solutions 🌍 The newly published The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change report presents a powerful call to action. 🚨With 10 out of 15 indicators of climate-related health hazards reaching record highs, we’re at a pivotal moment: 🔺 Heat-related deaths are sharply rising. 🔺 Mosquito-borne diseases like dengue are spreading into new regions. 🔺 Economic losses are piling up as health systems struggle to keep pace. 🔺 Heat exposure is leading to significant losses in labor hours, particularly affecting low- and middle-income regions. 🔺 Rising drought and extreme weather are contributing to increased food insecurity, impacting millions. However, there’s hope! 💚 🔹 A healthier future is achievable if leaders, corporations, and individuals act decisively now. 🔹 Engagement is growing across sectors, with more people, companies, and scientists addressing climate-health challenges. 🔹 Deaths from fossil fuel-derived air pollution fell by almost 7% in 2021, largely due to reduced coal use. 🔹 Global clean energy investment grew by 10% in 2023, with renewables’ share of electricity nearly doubling from 5.5% in 2016 to 10.5% in 2021. 🔹 Health system preparedness is increasing, as the number of systems conducting Vulnerability and Adaptation Assessments (VAAs) rose from 11 in 2022 to 50 in 2023. 🔹 Financial resources for a clean energy transition are available; prioritizing and redirecting them toward health-centric climate solutions is key. As we approach COP29 Azerbaijan, placing health at the center of climate action is essential. Let’s use this moment to shift resources toward a zero-emissions future that prioritizes the well-being of both people and the planet. It’s time to act swiftly to protect health, reduce inequities, and maximize health gains—especially for the communities that need it most. 📖 Read the full 2024 Lancet Countdown report here: https://lnkd.in/gfX_8MKr Let’s advocate for a cleaner, healthier world for all! #ClimateChange #Health #ClimateHealthFinance #ClimateHealthLiteracy #CleanEnergy #COP29 #Sustainability #HealthEquity #OneHealth #ClimateAction #LancetClimate24
🆕 The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change’s latest report shows record breaking health threats from climate change. While climate action is limited by a scarcity of funding, financial resources continue to be allocated to activities that harm health and hinder the transition to net zero greenhouse gas emissions. ❌ These investments jeopardise people’s wellbeing, health and survival which heavily depend on phasing out fossil fuels ❌ These investments further escalate climate risks for future generations ❌ These investments set us up for financial turmoil as we pursue a liveable future People’s health must be put front and centre of climate change action to ensure the funding mechanisms protect wellbeing, reduce health inequities and maximise health gains, especially for the countries and communities that need it most. A timely reminder from The Lancet Group on how climate change continues to drive serious threats to health. Anti-Fungal Resistance is a key component of this and the spread of fungal disease is costing lives and impacting well being across the globe particularly in areas severely impacted by climate change. The Medical Research Council Centre for Medical Mycology (MRC CMM) is working with the Department of Health and Social Care's Global AMR Innovation Fund (GAMRIF) by creating the FAILSAFE project that focuses on global research and development (R&D), One Health, and educational activities aimed at reducing the fungal disease burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) as antifungal drug resistance solutions are urgently needed. #climatechange #antifungalresistance #fungalantimicrobialresistance #fungaldisease #universityofexeter #thelancet #onehealth #CMMFAILSAFE #dhsc
