During our last community kitchen event, something remarkable happened. As we were distributing meals, we unexpectedly ran out of takeaway packs. Rushing to a nearby store to get more, we met Olamilekan a food vendor. Instead of accepting payment, Olamilekan chose to donate the packs to us. He was deeply moved by our efforts, something he had never seen in his community before, and wanted to be a part of it. Even if he was selling food , he didn’t feel uncomfortable about us giving out food around him. We salute Olamilekan’s generosity and his willingness to support his community. Now, imagine a world filled with more people like Olamilekan—where sharing and giving back are the norms, and everyone has enough to eat. This vision is within our reach, but it starts with each of us. Be like Olamilekan. As most event organizers know, food allocation can be a balancing act. While we always aim to ensure every guest is well-fed, there’s often a surplus at the end of the event. In today’s world, where food waste is a pressing issue, it’s more important than ever to find ways to make a positive impact with what’s left. At our recent event that we hosted with MIDLANDS AEROSPACE ALLIANCE, we were thrilled to donate leftover pork baps to a local charity. This small act of kindness not only helped reduce waste but also provided a meaningful contribution to those in need within our community. We encourage other event organizers to consider doing the same. Partnering with local charities or food banks is a straightforward and impactful way to ensure that surplus food doesn’t go to waste. As a business we are proud to support a number of charities, and our partnership with FareShare UK is one incredibly close to our hearts, perhaps now more than ever as it works to strengthen communities across the country. According to the Food Foundation, 23% of households with children reported experiencing food insecurity in 2023, while 88% of charities receiving food from Fareshare saw an increase in demand in 2022. We love hearing how our donations have contributed to the incredibly important work they do in supporting the work of frontline charities and community groups – and are pleased to share our impact report from the last year. In 2023, our Lactalis group of companies in the UK donated a total of 107.9 tonnes of food, received by 1,759 charities and community groups: 🍴 480 working with children and young people 🍴 164 working with people experiencing homelessness 🍴 84 older people’s community groups 🍴 34 supporting asylum seekers and refugees This means over the last seven years, together we have saved more than 600 tonnes of product from waste, helping those in need as well as the environment. And we look forward to working with the team during 2024 as we work towards our next milestone of creating 2 million meals (after we hit the 1 million meal milestone last year!).
